Staten Island Deputy Borough President Ed Burke (center, at the podium) was master of ceremonies as the S.I. Zoo hosted the 39th Annual Groundhog Day Celebration on Sunday, Feb. 2. New York City Council President Corey Johnson (right of Staten Island Chuck) watched as Charles G. Hogg (aka Chuck) left his burrow and was unable to see his shadow. Council President Johnson unfurled the "early spring banner." Investors Bank is sponsored the program that drew a few hundred Groundhog Day fans. Chuck, with an 80 percent accuracy rate, is one of the best weather-forecasting groundhogs, according to The Weather Channel.

Investors Bank presents the “S.I. Zoo’s Annual Mid-winter Ritual” as local officials and families gather to see if spring is on the way or it’s six more weeks of winter!

A few hundred children, parents and guests will arise before dawn and head to the Staten Island Zoo to celebrate Groundhog Day on Feb. 2.

Everyone is eager to watch Staten Island Chuck make his annual prediction of an early spring or six more weeks of cold winter.

Investors Bank is joining the Staten Island Zoo to present the Groundhog Day celebration for the sixth year in a row.

Local leaders who are expected to attend include:

• U.S. Rep. Max Rose (11th District), who will welcome guests;

• Staten Island Deputy Borough President Ed Burke, who is Master of Ceremonies;
• Richmond County District Attorney Michael McMahon,
• Staten Island Zoo Executive Director Ken Mitchell and
• Investors Bank CEO Kevin Cummings.

WHO: Staten Island Chuck emerges from the zoo’s high-tech “burrow” to make his forecast.

WHAT: S.I. Chuck, who is ranked as one of the best weather-forecasting groundhogs, will take a look outside his “burrow.” If Chuck sees his shadow there will be six more weeks of winter. If it is a cloudy day, Chuck will say “spring is on the way.” Students from a local elementary school will sing the national anthem and S.I. Chuck’s song.

WHERE: Staten Island Zoo, 614 Broadway, with an alternate entrance on Clove Road. Admission is free.

WHEN: Gates open at 6:30 a.m. at both Broadway and Clove Road, with free parking available off both entrances. At 7 a.m., program begins and an Investors Bank team distributes hot chocolate. At 7:30 a.m., S.I. Chuck makes his prediction.
