For the past several years I’ve been making installations with thousands of sewn plastic bags from around the world. On March 19th Westport, CT became the first town on the east coast to ban plastic bags (San Francisco, Los Angeles and the island of Maui have also). As part of the celebration I have been invited to transform the 7,500 square foot Great Hall of the Westport Public Library with my ever growing installation “Bolsas de Mandado”. The installation has been completely redesigned for the space and the individual pieces now hang as brightly colored banners high above volumes of books in one of New England's busiest libraries. The large scale installation is in conjunction with the exhibit “BYOBags: Westport Opts for Reusable Bags” organized by Liz Milwe who spearheaded the ban.

This is a wonderful opportunity when public art and social action come together to celebrate change.
