E Komo Mai (Welcome)
If you hope for a vacation that combines the benefits of a relaxing retreat and within easy access to natural beauty and fun-filled activities for all age groups, this is the getaway for you! We're far enough away from it all, yet amazingly close to many unique Hawaii experiences. First, Waimanalo is a small laid-back and underdeveloped country town with many small family farms and a beautiful sandy beach on the eastern shores of Oahu. It has one of the highest concentrations of Hawaiians (Hawaiian Homestead Lands) and local islanders on Oahu who want to keep the country atmosphere. The friendly Hawaiian greeting, "E komo mai" (welcome) is the spirit of this part of the island. It is a place to get away from the fast-paced tourist scene of Waikiki and Honolulu and live like the "locals" do. On this lush windward side of the island, your tropical dreams can come true, with waterfalls, verdant forests, azure blue and green ocean and fine sandy shores, bird sanctuaries, and majestic cliffs. Trade winds keep the area at a comfortable temperature. Many natural beauty sites and man-made features are within 20 minutes of this Hawaiian retreat located in the hills near the cliffs (pali) of Waimanalo. Once you visit, you will not want to leave.
Our plantation-style hale (home) is reminiscent of a time when sugar cane was grown and harvested in this area. Breathtaking views of the Ko`olau cliffs extend along the coastline. Breaching humpback whales are often seen offshore from November through April, and if you're lucky, you might see turtles or seals on the beaches here. Small offshore islands host many varieties of sea birds in protected sanctuaries. At our hale retreat, many tropical birds can be seen and heard throughout the day from Waimanalo stream behind our property. We love that it is an important gathering place and a wetland area for the nesting and feeding of several varieties, including the `alae `ula, that are endangered. (Watch YouTube video: " `Alae `Ula ~ Hawaiian Gallinule" )
As artists, we have enjoyed assembling artifacts of old Hawaii, including original pictures and our own artworks to decorate this cozy-feeling, comfortable home, called a "sanctuary" by many visitors. Our guests are immersed in the local culture from which our families were born and raised.
Here you can get away from it all, yet still have all of the amenities you desire. Our custom-designed and built home is only 14 years young, constructed with quality double walls and first rate materials such as bamboo flooring, ceiling fans throughout, high ceilings, double-paned windows, and rain forest marble counter tops in the kitchen. This home was built with great attention to detail and is well maintained. Palm trees with their natural beauty surround the property, and tropical flowers and trees, vegetables, and birds, (and a hydroponics garden on the property) make enjoying nature a part of your stay. Most vacation rental units and hotels lack the charm and comfort that this large home offers. They are missing the many "extras" that will enrich your island experience and make it a place to relax and unwind.
Our hale is located off the main highway in a safe, very private parcel of land, within a small community of only four homes on our cul-de-sac. Of course, there is no thru traffic. Parking is available on the property but is limited to 3 cars. We are also steps away from the island-wide public bus route for ease of travel to Waikiki and to the North Shore.
Two private bedrooms, each having a queen-sized bed, accommodate up to 4 adults. In addition there is a full size sofa bed in a semi-private area and two very comfortable lounging sofas in the living room available for four more adults. (NOTE: There is an additional fee for more than four guests) Every bedroom has rattan room-darkening shades, perfect for afternoon naps! Our guests really appreciate the spacious and well-appointed two and a half bathrooms. There are wall-mounted air conditioning units in all main rooms of the home, although they are rarely needed with our cooling trade winds. When they are used, the units are independent and individually controlled.
In addition, a fully-equipped chef's kitchen allows our guests to create small intimate meals or prepare gourmet dining experiences to entertain their guests. A six burner Wolf stove with two ovens, a water and ice dispensing refrigerator, dishwasher, cookware and equipment with a variety of serving dishes and glassware make meal preparation enjoyable. You will be able to seat and serve at least 16 people easily at indoor and outdoor dining tables. The home has been used for wedding showers, family gatherings, church retreats, and as a place of sanctuary for anyone needing time away.
A recent guest wrote: "Thank you . . . perfect getaway in your lovely Waimanalo home. Such a special place, steeped in Hawaiian tradition and having on hand so many things that bring comfort, contemplation, and consolation."
Waimanalo Hale has everything to match your comfort and needs, including WiFi, widescreen TV with sports channel cable, internet, and surround sound from Bose speakers. We have gathered a large collection of books for children and adults because we love to read, and shelves are filled with games we enjoy that have provided wonderful entertainment for our family and friends. The children's library and play area is just off of the living room, making it visible for adult supervision. We have provided our guests with many beach recreational needs, including boogie boards, a large cooler, picnic supplies, beach chairs, and lots of beach towels for your use. You will find an outdoor shower on the front lanai to rinse sand off your body and out of your suits! Large capacity, high-efficiency washing facilities are in a separate laundry room.
Our family members know the islands, its history, customs, and resources. As kama'aina (long-time residents) of many years, we can match your interests and needs to all that is available, maximizing your experience in the islands. Waimanalo, nearby Kailua, and Kaneohe towns are all filled with unique eateries and exotic restaurants serving ethnic foods as well as standard American fare for every budget and level of formality. With all of these Windward side options, if you still need more choices, restaurants in Waikiki and Honolulu are less than 30 minutes away.
