Thorpe House, the Grade II Listed country mansion is set on its own lake in Calderdale, one of the prettiest parts of West Yorkshire.
Thorpe House has been lovingly restored to return each bedroom to its historic splendor with today's luxuries such as flat screen TV and modern heating. Each room has its own bathroom and all have epic views over the gardens which extend to over 11 acres - including Thorpe's own lake. The house even features a fully functional lift which could help older or infirm visitors enjoy their stay even more.
Now Thorpe is available for your family and friends. Unlike many large houses, each guest will have the privacy of their own rooms and can also share the drawing room, dining room and, of course, Thorpe's gardens and lakeside setting.
The property is totally private and you'll have access to the whole estate. That means plenty of space to relax, more than enough space to get together and, to be practical, enough room for everyone's car!
Dating from the mid 18th Century - built for prosperous local gentry - the house has mostly been used as a private residence. The sweeping drive leads on to the circle in front of the house to the main entrance. The ornate glass vestibule leads on to a large hallway complete with crystal chandeliers and ornate arch. The cantilever staircase frequently gets a ‘wow’ when guests arrive and the Georgian formality has been called the ‘Downton feel’ by guests.
The drawing room has enough sofas and seating for everyone and no expense has been spared in using the finest materials to adorn the windows which look out onto the gardens. At night the chandeliers can be dimmed and the room turns into a softer, more relaxing, place where guests can play games or just take time to chat. The dining room, again, richly decorated, looks over to the gardens and lake. The room features two Doric columns which give a stately feel to the dining experience.
Thorpe House has a very practical and utilitarian kitchen with a large range cooker, and Aga and other appliances to help you prepare your meals. Bear in mind that the kitchen was for the servants and may not be the kind you are used to. That said, when the house was used as a boutique hotel it received a 5 Star Hygiene rating (in 2017).
Thorpe's location is idea for people who love to walk and the valleys contain a number of easy to hard walks. There are seven large reservoirs near by and most can be accessed by walkers yet you'll often be the only people there. Calderdale is one of the UK's hidden gems.
At night there are plenty of places to visit especially in nearby Ripponden which has often been voted one of the best places to live in England. The Old Bridge Pub (which opened in 1307!) is in walking distance and full of old world charm. Even though Ripponden is a small village, there are nine other pubs and restaurants to choose from.
A little further afield you'll find Halifax where the newly restored Piece Hall is worth a visit.
West Yorkshire is a great location and can be accessed easily from the M62 Motorway - almost equidistant from Leeds and Manchester.
Thorpe House is a large house with super facilities. You'll enjoy the experience of staying in one of West Yorkshire's premier houses which is grand yet homely and very comfortable.
