Brand new this season to the holiday let market, Oyster Bay comes as a big surprise. Tucked down the end of a private road at the top of Port Isaac village, the semi-detached property is accessed from the two-car parking bay via an enclosed deck garden with outdoor lounge seating that makes a lovely afternoon sun-trap. Here you will spot the additional free-standing cabin with kingsize bed and en-suite shower room and WC, television and DVD, which is also available to rent by separate arrangement (please be in touch with us to enquire: it's perfect for bringing the au pair if you are lucky enough to have one, or for the grandparents who would like to be on holiday with you but perhaps not in the same space all the time....) To the rear of the Cabin you will find washing lines and an outdoor shower for hosing off the beach before going inside.
Coming to Oyster Bay itself, entrance is via the well-equipped utility with sink, two towel rails for drying out beach-wet clothes, washing machine and tumble dryer. Here you will find mop, broom, hoover and cleaning supplies, should they be required. The utility leads in to a spectacular, large open-plan kitchen and dining room with marvellous sea views over to Tintagel Head.
The kitchen is well-appointed with double sink, large fridge freezer, an additional undercounter drinks fridge, electric aga and additional electric hob and oven, plus the usuals such as toaster, microwave and kettle. The kitchen is fully supplied with china, cutlery and cooking utensils. There is a large larder cupboard with another undercounter fridge and vegetable rack. We operate an honesty box system with regards to larder supplies: if you completely finish something, please replace it - it is considered exceptionally poor form to leave the larder without teabags or coffee in particular - but otherwise please make a donation to the jar provided to cover any supplies used. That way there should be some basic essentials on arrival but you will still need to do a shop (book your on-line shopping delivery as soon as you can - those slots disappear - although there is always the very useful Co-op just down the road).
The dining area enjoys full-width sea views over to Tintagel Head: you'll often see gig row boats out and the fishermen, shoals of porpoise and dolphin and myriad seabirds; sometimes, Lundy Island, 40 miles away in the Bristol Channel magically appears on the horizon. Additional occasional seating in the picture windows provides plenty of relaxing spots for reading and games. In the winter, you might like to light the woodburner and hunker down to watch the weather come in! We will provide you with a starter pack of wood for a first fire. There is also a music system to plug into, or Bluetooth speaker if you would prefer. We have aimed to make Oyster Bay a lovely place to be in whatever the weather - it has been known to rain in Cornwall!
A snug sitting room leads off from the kitchen with library shelves of books to borrow, lots of games and DVDs, desk, sofas, television and DVD player and woodburner. There is reliable WiFi as well as a landline. Please keep outgoing calls to the minimum; it is really there for incoming calls in case of patchy mobile reception. On this front, in our experience EE and Three have good coverage at Oyster Bay, O2 is non-existent. French windows lead onto the rear deck garden.
The downstairs hall is boldly and beautifully decorated and provides access to both the front and rear gardens and to a downstairs WC.
Like the rear deck garden, the front sea-view garden is also fully enclosed: mostly lawn, it is edged with stocked borders and a traditional Cornish drystone wall - we are hoping the native flora will find a home there soon. The small wooden gate gives out onto the lane end of Lundy Road. There is a lovely terrace for outside dining with Weber barbecue provided (please bring your own charcoal). There is a tap for outside water supply - handy for filling up a paddling pool.
There are five bedrooms upstairs. The master bedroom is particularly special, with a super-kingsize bed enjoying uninterrupted seaviews, ample clothes storage, well-appointed ensuite shower room and WC, plus a seaview balcony with seating from which to enjoy a quiet coffee or aperitif. Most amazing, perhaps, is the free-standing bath, right in the picture window! It is the ulitmate luxury to enjoy a soak with that view.
Adjacent is a small but charming bedroom with purpose-built adult-sized bunkbeds, again with seaview. Moving towards the back of the house, on the right is what we affecionately call the Wonky Room. The children's favourite, this has twin beds, each with bedside table, and vintage decorative touches. This is opposite the family bathroom with WC, basin, and bath with shower over, which also serves the twin room at the rear of the house. This smart twin room has a botanical theme and the single beds can be zip-locked together to make a super-kingsize bed - please let us know your preferred configuration at time of booking. Adjacent is the beautiful guest bedroom suite with kingsize bed, ensuite shower-room and WC, and ample clothes storage.
Oyster Bay itself sleeps 8 very comfortably and 2 in bunkbeds. The Cabin can sleep 2 comfortably and is available by separate arrangement in addition to Oyster Bay; it cannot be let independently from Oyster Bay. Apologies, but no pets.Get the full listing »
