Sandsend is a quaint picturesque village on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, offering miles of award-winning sandy beaches, streams and rock pools. Steeped in history, the remains of the old alum works and the coastal railway are still there to be seen. There are some wonderful restaurants in the village including an award-winning restaurant, a bistro, a pub serving food and three beachside cafés. There are also many walks close by, with some forming part of the Cleveland Way. Take a walk along the Cleveland Way, which runs along the top of the bay and offers fabulous views of the dramatic Yorkshire Heritage Coast. The coastline from Saltburn-by-the-Sea to Filey, is a place of rugged beauty, with many isolated fishing villages such as Staithes and Robin Hoods Bay.
Situated just 2 miles from the town of Whitby, with its year round events and festivals such as the Goth Weekend and the Steampunk Weekend. Famous for its link to Dracula, the abbey and its award winning fish and chips, Whitby has something for everyone. The North York Moors is the smallest of the National Parks, and is home to beautiful moors and woodland, ideal for walkers, and also holds many amazing old buildings from abbeys to castles. For nature lovers, why not take a trip to Saltholme Nature Reserve, North Gare beach at Seaton Carew, or visit Seal Sands, with a chance to see harbour and grey seals bask beside the tidal channels.
For something different you can take a steam train journey into ‘Heartbeat’ country and Goathland, or head out to sea on a boat trip, where you may see seals and dolphins. The traditional seaside resort of Scarborough is just 20 miles down the coast and has plenty on offer, from its ancient castle to the Sealife Centre and its two wonderful beaches.
