There are many activities available, and we'll mention some of our favorites.
Tybee's beach is great for walking. It is gently sloping with hard packed sand when the tide is out. No pets or glass is allowed on the beach. It is fun to walk and watch diving birds, look for dolphins, see container ships coming in or out of port, and people watch.
Good news for bicyclists. It is easy to pedal because Tybee is flat. Tybee has several rental locations.
Dolphins tours are available on Tybee. Charters can be arranged for offshore or onshore fishing, or just plain pleasure cruising on the many inland waterways.
There are active water sport activities available through shops on the island, including kayaking, surfing, sailboarding, and para sailing.
Tybee is a small barrier island, just 1.5 x 3 miles. There is not space enough for a golf course, but public courses are available in the Savannah area and at Hilton Head.
Tybee Island is in the greater Savannah, Georgia area, which is rich in cultural and architectural heritage. A visit to the historic district with its stately homes, shaded squares, and vibrant river front including free ferry service can be fun for all ages. Check local event calendars.
Farther afield, visitors can make day trips to Daufuskie Island, Hilton Head, and beyond. There are many historic sites including plantations such as Hofwyl-Broadfield near Brunswick GA, and historic villages and museums such as at Midway, GA and Darien, GA. A visit to Okefenokee swamp or even the oldest city in the US, St Augustine, FL can be considered.Get the full listing »
