Known as one of the most multi-cultural neighborhoods in the city, Lavapiés is brimming with international cuisine and culture. The area is also known as an artistic hotspot, with street artists on many street corners. Visit La Tabacalera to see examples of some of the most boundary-pushing art anywhere in the city. The former tobacco factory was taken over by the government in 2003 and turned into a multi-arts center and community garden with performance spaces and galleries. If you’re looking for a souvenir, then head on a Sunday to Rastro, the largest flea market in the city, and find a unique and unusual curio. Finally, to complete the artistic feel of the neighborhood, you can watch the newest releases or classic films at Cine Doré for as little as €2.50.
There is an abundance of great places to eat and drink in Lavapiés, from stylish and refined restaurants to raucous late-night bars. Gau&Café has to boast one of the best views of any restaurants in the city, situated as it is on a rooftop overlooking the rest of Lavapiés and beyond. El Económico Soidemersol might not be cheap but the sheer quality of the food means that it still represents good value for money. Finally, book in advance to secure a weekend table at La Caleta for the very best of regional Spanish cuisine focused on the food of Cadiz. For an evening drink, head to Olivia for a reasonably priced bar and energetic live music and DJs spinning doo-wop, swing and surf tracks. For a more refined and relaxed live music experience, try La Pianola Bar where you can sip on a cocktail while listening to jazz and flamenco music. Finally, for an authentic wood-paneled bodega with a little history behind it, try Taberna Tirso de Molina which dates back to 1864 and is named after one of Spain’s most important playwrights.
The nearest metro station is Tirso de Molina which connects you with L1 (blue line). It is located just a four-minute walk away.
From the Airport to the apartment, the easiest way is to take the C1 train and get off at Atocha, there you need to switch and take the metro L1 (blue line) direction to Pinar de Chamartin and get off at Tirso de Molina. This journey will take around 45 minutes! Exploring Madrid could hardly be easier!Get the full listing »
