Calpe: Holiday resort with a picturesque rock in the sea
The Penyal d'Ifac, which divides the two main beaches of Calp, has become one of the landmarks of the Costa Blanca. Attractions of Calp
The resort radiated a certain modern sophistication and above all: on the beach overlooking the sea, the apartment blocks in the back and out of sight. But the Penyal d'Ifac almost always catches the eye. The 322 m high mountain is connected by a narrow isthmus with the mainland and today protected as a nature park. An ascent is possible and is rewarded with a beautiful view. Firm shoes should not be forgotten, because the way is sometimes slippery.
The old town is a bit hidden away from the beaches. The restaurants are more like the beach areas and the fishing port. Worth seeing are the salt pans of Calp, where again and again flamingos can be observed
Calpe is located on the north coast of the province of Alicante in the municipality of Marina Alta and is surrounded by the municipalities of Altea, Benidorm, Teulada-Moraira and Benissa. This municipality in the shadow of the Peñón de Ifach, the symbol of the Costa Blanca, is of great tourist interest.
Calpe (Valencian: Calp) is picturesquely located on the White Coast between Alicante and Valencia. With around 30,000 inhabitants, Calpe is one of the small towns in Spain, but is still a very popular tourist destination for many Germans and other Europeans.
Calpe, a fishing village par Excellence with 13 kilometers of coast, lapped by the shores of the Mediterranean and protected by the shadow of the Peñón de Ifach, the symbol of Calpe and the Costa Blanca.
From ancient times, Calpe was an agricultural community producing almonds, raisins and locust beans, but at the same time a fishing village dedicated to the fishing and extraction of saline salt, which later became a tourism community. The fish auction goes back to ancient times and is today with numerous visitors one of the most famous attractions of Calpe. The auction consists of the wholesale sale of freshly caught fish by the fishermen of Calpe and is organized by the Fisheries Cooperative.
From the bays of "El Collao" to the west, we find beaches such as "Arenal-Bol", "Cantal Roig" or "Levante", 2 yacht clubs and a fishing port that offers a very vivid picture and a restaurant next to it the ascent to the Peñón de Ifach, sailing in the bay, a visit to the Real Club Nautico de Calpe, a stroll along the "Paseo Ecológico Príncipe de Asturias", enjoying the delights of the Bay of Calpe swimming in the "Baños de la Reina", deep-sea diving in the bays, swimming on the fine sandy beaches, a visit to the Salinas or the old town, sporting activities in the fully equipped facilities or a visit to the varied, rich fiestas are just a few examples for what you can do in Calpe.
The most unusual attraction Calpe is certainly the limestone cliffs Peñón de Ifach.
This stone giant overlooks the region and is a reliable, consistent guide for the entire area around Calpe to Moraira.
The Peñón de Ifach, a calcareous rock with a height of 332 meters and a rich vegetation, in which many birds find shelter, was declared a nature reserve in 1987.
Visitors come through a 30 meter long tunnel to the top of the rock, which is declared nature reserve.
At its foot are a yacht club and a fishing port. Divers, climbers and other nature lovers will love the Peñón de Ifach. The rock covers about 50,000 square meters and protrudes about a kilometer into the sea. He is connected by a isthmus with the mainland. Around the Ifach, in the Bay of Calpe, visitors will find fine sandy beaches that invite you to linger.
Access to the mountain is signposted in Calpe. The first piece from the foot of the rock to the information center is easy to tackle. From here you have a wonderful view of the city, the surrounding mountains and the harbor. Anyway, we were excited about this view. In the center there are interesting details about the history and flora and fauna of the park. Next to the information center is the lock with the counter, here begins the actual way uphill Although this is only a difference in altitude of about 300 m, but it is not without. Be sure to bring some dynamic and especially good footwear for the ascent, because the route is only serpentine, then it is a smooth tunnel to cross and the last part of the climb is quite steep. But the view compensates for all the trouble, provided the weather is right. With very clear air you should be able to see from the summit even to the Balearic island of Ibiza.
No matter where you are in Calpe, the rock always dominates the surrounding area and serves as an excellent mark. Until 1987 he was privately owned, today he belongs to the general public and is awarded as a nature park. There is even the possibility to climb the rock. Under certain circumstances, however, you may have to wait longer before ascending. The number of admitted visitors is limited
