SOUTH ORANGE, N.J., June 6, 2013 - Short Hills residents Gary Shedlin (r) and Sue Wishnow (l) have been busy for many months putting into motion several initiatives to help their fellow congregants at Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel (TSTI) reflect on the temple's rich history and invest in its future. Shedlin is chairing the newly formed Rabbinic Endowment for Jewish Learning established in recognition of Rabbi Daniel Cohen's 20th anniversary at TSTI.

"This endowment is a fitting tribute to Rabbi Cohen's commitment to education, innovation and inclusivity within our community and beyond," said Shedlin. "It will further TSTI's ability to provide high-quality Jewish education to future generations, regardless of special needs or family income." The endowment has already raised more than $725,000 in pledges.

Wishnow, TSTI VP of Ways and Means, has been instrumental in planning and promoting two special events in recognition of Cohen's 20 years of service as well as overseeing the fundraising. The first is a celebratory Friday night service and special oneg Shabbat on June 7 at 7:30 p.m., featuring guest speaker Dr. Carol Meyers, Cohen's undergraduate professor at Duke University. Meyers will speak on the relevancy of archaeology in today's political world, while the children enjoy a special enrichment program.

On Saturday, June 15, TSTI will welcome Rabbi David Ellenson, Ph.D., president of Hebrew Union College and one of Cohen's professors at rabbinical school, who will speak on the importance of being and remaining in the progressive movement. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., the evening will also include an elaborate reception featuring a lavish assortment of food, drinks and desserts.

Based in South Orange, New Jersey, Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel is a Reform congregation that welcomes all who wish to participate in and celebrate Jewish traditions and rituals. The temple draws members from many towns including South Orange, Maplewood, Short Hills, Millburn, Livingston and West Orange.
