Remodelled Old Adobe, Historic East Side by Canyon Road

Located in: Santa Fe
For travelers who seek authenticity and adventure in their wanderings, we offer this home. Staying in this house will cost about the same as renting a room in the closest hotel but with three bedrooms and a kitchen, it is a wonderful way to be in the most desirable part of Santa Fe while sharing it with family and friends. Charming Adobe, Historic District suits the discerning guest who desires a representation of the life-style of Old Santa Fe. This ancient adobe structure, lovingly built to last and from the very earth it stands upon will provide you an experience to remember. In the late 1800’s, this house was built by an extended family which had the interest of sheltering its offspring with materials derived from the earth. With little money, much passion and more time, the mud and straw was mixed and baked in the sun to form bricks which were laid one by one on the walls to create an organic edifice, with plenty of curves and no right angles. On top of the walls were cut and laid vigas (strong trees) that would support the roof that protects the family from elements. Latillas (little sticks) were placed on top of the vigas to create a ceiling and then more adobes to add insulation, keeping the growing family warm and dry. The adobes assured an ambient temperature to keep the inhabitants comfortable, winter and summer. All of this was accomplished by strong hands, many years ago and remains a lasting testament to the love and care a family feels for each other and is part of the beauty and integrity of the place. Today’s building standards, with an eye on profit and expenditures will never equal those of the past in timelessness or quality. Inside, you feel the embrace of the lives that lived and loved in the house. Blazing, fragrant pinon and juniper fires will snap and crackle in kiva fireplaces like they did when they warmed the bones of the builders a century ago. Everything from the smoke dwindling out the chimney to the creaking wood floors has a story to tell. This is Santa Fe: the heart of it, surrounded by similar million dollar homes that have been purchased by adventurers like you who value the intrinsic funkiness and beauty of Santa Fe’s historical homes. Or, many homes are still inhabited by the original families that built them. I have updated and put in new utilities but retained all of the charm and character so you can enjoy today’s conveniences with the historic character of this special home.
The house is not on the “square” (what we call the plaza). The rust mark on the bathtub is from the cast iron which has been patina-ed over the last 50 years or so. The ceilings are low (but not too low) and the rooms snug and cozy. Some people will not know the value of being nestled in an adobe on the east side of town. Close to Canyon Road, the Plaza and Museum Hill. It is meant for those who enjoy meandering along the river walk or Acequia Madre or Palace or Canyon Roads as much as rushing from one gallery to the next exclusively on the Plaza. Those who understand that visiting a place is more than being in the tourist area but also about the journey to get there. Or maybe a guest would enjoy exploring the Randall Davies Audobon Center, absorbing the beauty of nature. Perhaps driving or walking up to Museum Hill to get a taste and feel of Santa Fe through its history.
As a host, I strive to deliver a superb experience for my guests. You will find organic or natural food items and high quality cleansing products for your use. I am looking for a particular type of guest...a guest who wants an authentic experience for their visit to Santa Fe. The kind of guest who has a Wanderlust or a Wonder Lust and desires a taste of the authentic. That is the guest I invite and welcome to my home. I would be extremely honored to be your host and share my special place, at the foot of the Sangre de Christos (Blood of Christ) Mountains, only yards away from the Santa Fe River and several blocks to the galleries of Canyon Road and the Tea House, so that you can experience the extraordinary and real Santa Fe, Past and Present. I hope you come and stay!
