This year's Motor Trend SUV of the year competition included some pretty stiff competition. From the super-luxurious to the super-tough, the contestants gave their all in an attempt to bring home the coveted golden calipers. After a grueling competition including both on- and off-road driving, the 2015 Honda CR-V was named Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year.

Among the changes for 2015 that impressed the judges and led towards its victory was an all-new CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). This transmission results in smooth driving and fuel efficiency in normal conditions or powerful acceleration when demanded. Although this is not the first CVT to be featured in this type of vehicle, it overcomes some of the drawbacks found in the others such as "fake" feeling shifts. In the poetic words of one judge, "Nail the gas to pass and the trans delivers a snappy downshift to the power peak."

Value is another key component of the competition and it's almost impossible to argue with Honda's resale value. The 2015 Honda CR-V is no exception. Not only does the CR-V hold its value better than its rivals but the owners of CR-Vs have had to spend less on insurance, repairs and maintenance than the owners of other small SUVs. With a starting SMRP of $23,320 the Honda CR-V is a great value for a family-sized SUV.

What good is value without safety? The judges found the answer to this question in the 2015 CR-V's all-new Honda Sensing System. This package offers many new and enhanced safety features including LKAS (Lane-Keeping Assist System), CMBS (Collision Mitigation Braking System), ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), LDW (Lane Departure Warning), and Honda LaneWatch. The combination of these features will help protect the driver who, for whatever reason, becomes inattentive and gets too close to another vehicle or wanders out of their own lane.

Specifications and performance numbers can be compared all day long, but a vehicle doesn't achieve SUV of the year status on numbers and specifications alone. Possibly the most important factor is a subjective one. The judges must be impressed with the way a vehicle handles. Is it fun to drive? In the case of the 2015 CR-V, their answer was a resounding "yes." The judges' were all impressed with the driving experience offered by the 2015 CR-V and their reviews reflected this with words like "sporty" and phrases like "fun to drive." With a great driving experience, value and innovative features it’s easy to see why the 2015 Honda CR-V was named Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year.
