Welcome to our home! We are located in the Historic Manchester neighborhood, in the Northside of Pittsburgh. We're within walking distance to Heinz Field, Rivers Casino, Allegheny Commons Park, PNC Park, The National Aviary, Pittsburgh Children's Museum, The North Shore, and so much more! We're minutes from the T to take you downtown, a quick drive from the Strip District, and close to the main highways.
The home is on the National Historic Register and was built in 1883 by the Reymer family.
The Reymer's had a Candy Factory (also known as the Forbes Pride Building, or Forbes Med-Tech Center) and it was built in 1906 in the Richardsonian Romanesque style.
Reymer and Anderson was one of the first confectionaries in Pittsburgh and it boomed during the Civil War when people sent their candies to soldiers. They prospered during the last half of the nineteenth century as Phillip Reymer's sons, Jacob and Harmer, took over the business. By 1906 when the new factory was built, the Reymer family had left the business but their name lived on. In 1908 the firm claimed that it was "one of the largest confectionary houses in the world," and that it had 5,000 vendors in the Pittsburgh area.
The firm ran five teahouses in Pittsburgh. These may have contributed to perception that the firm made quality products, but were unprofitable. An uncarbonated soft drink "Lemon Blennd" accounted for 70% of their sales in 1959. The company was taken over in 1959 by a competitor, Dimling's, which went out of business in 1969.
You will have access to the guest suite that takes up the entire 3rd floor of our home. You'll have private entrance via our back stairway. It is all pictured in the listing. The back courtyard will be shared access and you will sometimes see two friendly Boston Terrriers back there.
Interaction with Guests:
We will be reachable via Airbnb, and if we're home we're happy to say hi!
Our house is situated in historic Manchester, one of Pittsburgh's original neighborhoods. We're a few blocks away from one of Pittsburgh's largest park's which hosts many events including the farmer's market on Fridays in the summer/fall. Within walking distance of many local restaurants, pubs, shops, and cafes on Western Ave. We are conveniently close to everything, just right across the river from downtown and the rest of Pittsburgh.
We have more information concerning the history of our home and neighborhood along with plenty of local suggestions (restaurants to try, places to go, and things to see) inside our personal guidebook!
If you do not have a car, there are buses, cabs and of course Uber and Lyft. We are also about 10 minute walk from the T (The Pittsburgh Light Rail). The T goes downtown and through the south side of the city.
If you've never used Uber before, feel free to message us for a discount code for your first Uber ride! They're all over Pittsburgh and very easy to use.
Other Things to Note:
We have 2 daughters, a toddler and a newborn as of Feb. and we're on the first 2 floors. Noise shouldn't be a concern, but please keep in mind that we're in the same building.
Also, you'll need to climb a few sets of stairs to access any of the bedrooms or bathrooms.
We have 2 small dogs, and although they do not have access to the 3rd floor, they will be on the property, and will have access to our backyard.
