Willow Vale House is the perfect destination for exploring the Hudson Valley in all four seasons of the year.
Originally constructed in 1763, built out circa 1850, and recently renovated in early 2018, today Willow Vale House is a tasteful blend of rustic charm and modern comfort.
The house spans two-thousand spacious square feet. Upstairs there are two simply decorated bedrooms, each with a with a queen-sized bed. A third bedroom can be used with a provided queen-sized air mattress.
The downstairs space is ideal for socializing over food and wine. The living room, centered around an original fireplace (unfortunately not currently in working order), is a perfect space to spend an afternoon with a good book, a late evening nightcap, or a good movie on our 49" TV.
Our spacious, open, and fully-equipped chef's kitchen and dining room is built around a Bertazonni gas range, with cherry butcher-block countertops. The rustic farmhouse dining table seats up to 8, ideal for cozy dinner parties or late night board games. If you’re looking for an upstate culinary experience, this is the place for you.
Outside, the property is 6.8 acres across two parcels on the outskirts of Pine Plains, NY. The house sits on one acre which includes a grassy backyard complete with a fire pit, perfect for late night stargazing. Across the country lane and just down the embankment you’ll find Shekomeko creek, which loops around a forested 6 acres of property, great for an afternoon hike. In the Summertime, the creek is fairly low and easy to cross, and we’re told it’s home to several types of trout. The rest of the year, the water is often bit higher.
The back porch is also meshed in for those less adventurous, and has a large farmhouse table for outdoor dining. We also have a brand new Weber propane grill you can use in the back yard.
Pine Plains is a quaint town in the Hudson Valley, where Dutchess and Columbia Counties meet. The house is a short 5 minutes away from several town amenities including a grocery store, a bank, post office, and the historic Stissing House restaurant. In Pine Plains you'll also find Stissing Lake beach, just a short 15 minutes from the house by bicycle and 5 minutes by car.
The Hudson Valley is also home to an endless list of incredible small towns in every direction, each with great restaurants, boutiques, antique shops, farm stores and markets, and so much more.
The house is approximately:
• 2 hours from NYC
• 40 minutes to Vassar College
• 35 minutes to Hudson
• 35 minutes to Germantown
• 28 minutes to Bard College
• 25 minutes to Rhinebeck
• 20 minutes to Troutbeck
• 15 to Millerton
If traveling to the area by train, Metro-North and Amtrak run between Grand Central to Poughkeepsie and Wassaic, NY, where you can take a car service or rent a vehicle, though a car is recommended to explore the area.
You will have access to the full house, with the exception of a backyard facing living room on the lower level and the basement. Outside of that, there's plenty of room for relaxing in our front living room, dining room, and kitchen area. The backyard is great for spending time in the sun, and the 6+ acres across the lane are dense forest surrounded by a flowing creek, perfect for a short hike.
This is a very old house with lots of updates, but still has the qualities of a dwelling built over 250 years ago. There are definitely some quirks that guests should be aware of like old wood frame windows, some of which do not open, low railings around the stairwell on the upper floor, an old stove pipe hole in the floor of one of the smaller bedrooms (covered by a stack of books), and a sensitive plumbing system.
The main floor heat is controlled by the Nest thermostat in the dining room. The upstairs is heated by electric baseboard heaters controlled by on-board thermostats.
For Summer months, we have a window Air Conditioning unit in the master bedroom.
There is a brand new 49" TV with Netflix however we do not have cable TV.
The unfurnished third bedroom can be set up with a queen sized air mattress. We also have a twin-sized air mattress that can be used if needed.
Cell reception at the house is limited and only works sometimes. You can use our WiFi for texting, and we also have a land line that you can use for outgoing phone calls.
The house is equipped with an outside security camera that points at the back porch that can be shut off by guests upon arrival.Get the full listing »
