Gramma's Cottage-Horseback Riding, Walk/Hike/Shoot, BBQ, Fire Pit, Dogs OK!

Located in: Parks

MID AUG UPDATE: Horseback riding available on site and guided rides in National Forest, shooting & 4wd tours in full swing! Beautiful low 80’s average temps. Cool nights about 50F. Bring kids & friendly dogs, YOUR HORSES or Quads!

Your 1b, 1ba cottage with a new King Bed IS NOT AN APARTMENT, CONDO or TRAILER. AND IT IS NOT NEAR I-40 OR TRAIN HORNS. Nor is your cottage in 1-2 acre or less, packed areas like Kachina Village, Mountain Aire, Baderville, or Sherwood Forest, which are neighborhoods. These are NOT desirable, mixed communities with nice houses and junk properties mixed together.

At this cottage, you will not be in a suburban or semi-rural neighborhood. You’ll be staying far from local cities. This is a free-standing, remote, deep-in-forest place with a gorgeous view of the famous Spring Valley. Big shade and regular breezes. But high winds are sheltered by the Pines. Nearest major road and freeway are Route 66 (6-1/4 miles S) and I-40 (7 - 7-1/4 miles S).

This property was initially developed in 1990 by the Wrigley Family. Yes. Wrigley Field (Chicago Cubs), Wrigley Chewing Gun. Known by legacy as “The Wrigley Ranch,” it’s most recently known as “Dago Joe’s Place.”

As remote as this may be, you'll be safe and secure as we are here on property to assist in any unusual or emergency situation. We have never had such an occurrence. However, we do have clear and efficient plans for any unexpected medical emergency. We have motion sensored night lights that you can enable or disable. Star gazers usually disable as do fire pit burners!

Your cozy 1b, 1ba cottage is nestled in 40ft-75ft Ponderosa and Lodgepole pines, the perfect place for a weekend getaway deep in the Kaibab National Forest. Whether you’re looking to beat the heat of The Valley, Havasu, or Vegas, or for a serene trip, a romantic getaway, or an adventure vacation, or even a honeymoon, this is the place. And in late Spring thru Mid-Fall, we can offer you a green, cool and wildlife filled stay!

In Late Spring, Summer, and Early Fall, you'll love the "no air conditioning needed" comfort of the cottage. Open, crack or close windows to adjust your room temp. In Winter or when nights are cool or cold, you'll have a pellet stove that will keep you toasty on its lowest settings!

Cottage features 1 KING master bedroom with attached master bathroom, living room with fold-out Futon, HD TV with DirecTV, kitchen, kitchen nook, outdoor seating, open flame, wood burning BBQ/Fire Pit, gas BBQ and picnic table. Additional seating around fire pit.

Free, included amenities include 1 bag of wood pellets per 2 night stay between April and October. Additional bags, if needed, at only $7 ea. Also included is one free 12 pack of split firewood per stay for fire pit. BBQ utensils for outdoor cooking included. Add'l firewood at $6 per 12 add'l pieces (about 1/2 the cost of local stores). No Wi-Fi because of satellite bandwidth limitations/costs. No cell phone reception because you're too deep in the woods! To use your cell phone, you'll need to drive out to the prairie about 2-1/2 miles down the road.

Tarry on out to our pond and enjoy sitting on our glider/bench while the geese and ducks frolic. If you like, bring fresh fruits and veggies to hand feed all the free-grazing birds. Horses love carrots and apples! Our dogs will likely follow you around. Goats love being visited. Take the baby goats for a walk. Both the dogs and the goats just want company and attention!

Walk freely on our 10 acre property plus its 30-40 acre adjacent, fenced forest or head out on walking trails to Spring Valley Tank where elk, antelope and deer get their water. Or take a hike on Sitgreaves or Government Mountain for fantastic views. Cottage sits at the base of both.

Lava River Cave only about 7mi SE on occasionally graded dirt/cinder roads. Watch out for Elk, Deer, Antelope, Wild Turkeys and other critters. EZ and fun dirt bike or quad ride on cinder, gravel and dirt roads. Not a pool table. BRING YOUR QUADS. Plenty of room to park your quad trailer next to the barn. No charge!

Fishing at local lakes most Spring, Summer and Fall. Coleman Lake and Dogtown Lake are nearby in Williams. Hunting and/or target shooting available outside of all residential areas in the national forest unless County, State or National Forest Service fire bans are in place. AZ hunting license necessary to hunt or fish. No license required for target shooting.

Grand Canyon a little over an hour due North. Bearizona drive-thru wildlife park about 13 miles West. Sedona and its Red Rock majesty about an hour SE. Meteor Crater and Painted Desert about 45 mins E. Out of Africa wildlife park and new, indoor shooting range about 1:15 SE. Snow Bowl winter ski resort and its Summer Fun activities nearby in Flagstaff.

Folks often ask how close walking trails are. Start at your cottage’s door and virtually head out in any direction! Take a 2 mile RT flat walk or dirt bicycle ride to Spring Valley Tank, a very popular watering hole for all thirsty wildlife around here on the Spring Valley Trail. Take a hike or dirt bicycle ride to Shulz Pass and see it's gorgeous high mountain meadows about 1 - 1-1/2 miles past Spring Valley Tank. Or for near 360 degree views of most of Northern Arizona’s highest peaks plus a glimpse of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, take a 2 mile RT hike due East to Lone Tree Lookout, about 1/2 mile past Mule Deer Hill on Spring Valley Knolls. Or take a 4 mile RT on the Spring Valley Trail along the base of Sitgreave’s foothills to the new end of the trail where a Martian type, landscape desolation developed from a massive wildland fire 6-8 years ago. And if you dare and you’re in high altitude climbing condition, try mountain hiking to the peak of Mt. Sitgreaves due West of here. No fire roads. No trails unless you stumble upon an elk trail. We are told that only 5 people per year find the summit and make it to the top. Please advise us in writing if you intend to try it. If you tackle this challenge, please advise us when you depart and when we should expect your return. Please have a cell phone and GPS emergency locator with you if you try!

Min night stay depends upon dates. Max stays: 9 nights. 650-700 sq ft is an estimated cottage size; what we were told when we purchased the property.

Friendly dogs welcome. But they MUST be perfectly controlled by voice commands OR must be on leash. Dogs may not be left alone in cottage unless we approve in advance. Incessant barking is banned by law. Unless you can absolutely control you dog(s) please don't bring them. No felines (cats) unless we approve in writing in advance. Additional cleaning may be required for cats or heavy shedding dogs.

Immunized, wormed, well and sound horses welcome. Separate 1+ acre pasture available for guest equines. Trailer parking included FREE. Water included FREE. Barn available for tack storage if needed. $22.50 per horse per night. Additional if we supply alfalfa: $3 per flake per feeding. 2lbs 12% grain (sweet feed) @ $2 per feeding. We have alfalfa and sweet feed grain (10-12%) only. No Timothy, Orchard Grass, Bermuda or other grains. Parks Feed may have other options for you once you’re here.

"Emergency" hosted laundry services for spills on bedding at $20 per load (wash and dry). No self-serve laundry available. If you have a different type of laundry emergency, please ask if we can help.

This is a NO SMOKING COTTAGE indoors. OUTDOOR AREA: Concrete parking area and around the outdoor fire pit. NO BUTTS IN FIRE PIT nor to the ground ever. Store smoked butts in cans or bottles. NO SMOKING OUTSIDE OR OFF THESE TWO VERY SPECIFIC AREAS. NO SMOKING ON TRAILS NOR ANYWHERE IN SURROUNDING NATIONAL FOREST. Fires in dense forest are a major concern here no matter what official bans may be in place or not.

Hosted shooting may be available at additional cost that varies depending on weapons chosen and cost of their ammunition. Limited to two users per outing. Ask for quotation, scheduling and availability. Or bring your own guns and ammo for target shooting in the Nat’l Forest.

Varmint hunting requires an AZ hunting license. Big game requires tags must be acquired about a year in advance. No game processing on site. Field dressing only. Ask about temporary storage of bagged meat. Refrigerator & its small freezer generally available. $10 first night of use. $5 ea add’l nite.

Horseback riding is usually available most of the year, limited by weather and ground conditions (mud/snow). Smooth sole riding/cowboy boots mandatory (we rent boots @ $5 per stay). Other mandatory wear: long sleeve shirt, long pants (no shorts), jeans preferred (no leggings, comfy pants, or jogging outfits), ski clothing OK in Winter, waterproof clothing/rain gear during Summer monsoons (June 20 - Sept 20), well-lined or heated gloves in Winter, thick or heated socks in Winter, sunglasses recommended in Summer but mandatory if snow cover is >50%, and long Johns or layers in Winter. $50 per horse per hr, one hr payable via Visa, MC, PayPal or Cash. No checks of any kind or character. We saddle. Free but mandatory acquainting where you will groom, pick hooves, do ground work and ride in small areas. Then, we will rate your comfort, confidence and control and set riding limits accordingly: on our roads only, in the 3 acre fenced pasture, our 40 acre fenced property and forest, or ride anywhere in the Nat’l Forest. For most forest rides a guide will be mandatory (flat $25 fee).

Ask us about Lava River Cave, Bearizona, Sedona, Out of Africa, Havasupi’s turquoise falls, Sunset Crater, Meteor Crater, Horseshoe Bend, Zion Nat’l Park, the North Rim, Flagstaff Arboretum and Observatory, local fishing, predator and varmit hunting, the Grand Canyon.
