Here's your chance to stay in the beautiful modernist villa and studio Robert Trickey created for himself in 1999, and which launched the career of AIA award-winning San Francisco architect Craig Steely (who has since built a number of impressive homes in Hawaii (though of course, this is the original, and still the best :)

The entire property has just undergone an extensive (and expensive!) remodel to freshen and sharpen the awesome beauty of this gorgeous gem of sleek modern design and the pool is truly magnificent in it's new incarnation.

This listing is for the 4-bedroom Main House, which sleeps up to 10 guests. (The studio unit Guest House is also available and is listed here on Airbnb in a separate listing.) If you have a really large party traveling together or just want the ultimate luxury of complete privacy, you can book both units simultaneously-- just contact us to see about availability for your dates.

The main house has 7 separate beds (4 king beds and 3 twin beds) arranged as follows:

SOME PRICING NOTES:
The base price in the listing for the Main House is for 1 TO 4 GUESTS;
after that, there is a per-guest, per-night charge.
Children who will be 2 years or older at the time of your stay are considered paying guests, and we allow 1 infant per party free of charge, unless prior arrangements have been made.
By entering the date range and the number of guests, you can see the total price for your proposed stay, including all fees, etc.
The site will automatically incorporate a 10% discount for stays of a week or longer.
Pricing does vary by season, so your per-night base rate may be higher than the one shown on the listing-- sorry, there's no way to change that.
Last-minute discounts are available, and sometimes for other situations, too.

Pohakunani also appears in two design & architecture books: ISLAND LIVING, by Linda Leigh Paul, (pub: Rizzoli), and MINIMALIST HOUSES by Simone Schleifer (pub: Taschen).

When you see the sleek simplicity of the design setting off the jagged lava field, framing stunning views that sweep from the ridge of the rift zone down to the glimmering ocean, you’ll know why.

The pool wraps the front of the house, providing a lovely reflecting pond for the elegant, refined simplicity of the architectural volumes, and each room inside is characterized by rich color and an urbane mix of modern and antique furnishings.

At Pohakunani, you'll find a more stylish, tasteful and private experience than any of the other rentals in the area. Here, you can enjoy all the wild beauty of this place from a comfortable and sophisticated vantage point.

Many of our guests find themselves just hanging around the deep-blue pool for hours on end, relaxing in the quiet, other-worldly beauty of the place (and most express the wish that they didn’t have to leave!)

With regard to Puna, if you haven’t stayed in this area before, you’ll be amazed to find such a truly heavenly and unspoiled part of “Old Hawaii” as these parts— Lush and green, yet drier and better for outdoor activities than other parts of Puna— You’ll see why residents think of it as “our little secret”.

Among your privileges is shared access to the gorgeous Swimming Pool and use of the lounge chairs and Lava Terrace area for sunbathing, and the only other guests that will be sharing these amenities might be those in the small, private Guest House at the front of the property.

The pool is not heated, but at the ambient temperature it is usually quite comfortable, (ranging usually between 76 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit.) Pool towels are provided.

The pool is an integral part of the overall architectural composition, running the length of the front of the Main House, as well as projecting forward in the direction of the Guest House, and because of it's proximity to the Main House, guests in each area are requested to be sensitive to the others' privacy as reasonably possible, and the arrangement is usually very successful and agreeable.

To insure our guest's privacy NO outside (unregistered) guests are permitted on the property unless by prior arrangement. If outside guests are agreed-to, there may be day-use charges, so please check first.

Whenever possible, we greet guests in person for their check-in with a quick but thorough tour of the property and it's details and amenities.
I make every effort to be available to my guests by e-mail, text, phone or in person, and should I be absent, there will be a qualified person to assist you with any needs that may arise.
My approach is to make sure guests know I'm available for them, yet leave them alone to enjoy their privacy as much as possible.

We're in a quiet and safe neighborhood called Puna Beach Palisades, which has a high proportion of custom homes and low density for a very relaxed and friendly experience. Kehena Black Sand Beach (which is clothing optional) is just a 10 minute stroll, and there are lots of nice walks and spots for quick car jaunts up and down the coast within 20 minutes of the house.

Though we love the quiet and privacy, some mainland guests have reported being surprised that there were no stores, gas stations, restaurants, bars, etc. nearer than the 20 minutes it takes to get to Pahoa. There is a convenience store in Kalapana 5 minute's drive away, and Kalani, a small resort, offers lunch and dinner service often, but that is pretty much it unless you go to Pahoa or further to Kea'au or Hilo.

You'll want a rental car to visit the Big Island, as it is truly... Big! Guests sometimes comment that the distances are greater than they expected, so be sure to familiarize yourself with maps or some of the great guidebooks you can get online.

It's a very easy place to navigate, though, and we'll help you with any specific questions about places to see or things to do.

I always encourage guests to pick up a copy of a good guidebook, like "Hawaii, The Big Island Revealed", before they come so they can do their research, and I provide a copy in each unit for your use while you are here.

There is currently virtually no cell service at the house (1 intermittent bar in one particular location on the back of the Main House lanai), however there is a landline with free long-distance service to the US as well as wifi so you will not be cut-off from the world! Despite these other ways of connecting, some guests from the mainland who are attached at the hip to their phones may find the absence of coverage distressing, so please make sure you are OK with this if you book the house.

Pohakunani is built on the edge of a pristine lava field, a wilderness area that is, like much of the Puna district, completely natural and untouched. There are MANY KINDS OF CREATURES who live side by side with us since it's their home, too: Birds; small mammals like mongeese, mice & rats; toads & frogs; geckos & lizards; Insects like coconut beetles, mosquitoes, flies, roaches, tiny fruit flies, etc.

Guests who come from the Mainland USA or other countries sometimes are surprised or even upset that some of these creatures find their way into our man-made environment, and while we do everything reasonable to maintain the separation of "our" territory and "theirs", it's simply not possible to completely eliminate their presence from the interiors of the units.

Geckos, for example, will NEVER not be inside pretty much ANY Hawaiian home-- In fact, it's said that they are good luck in the home (and they do eat insects, so they are actually helping. They are also more afraid of you than you could be of them, so they will stay away from you and present no danger to you at all!)

Therefore, if you know yourself or anyone in your party to be phobic about insects, bugs or unwanted visitors of the sort described above, please DO NOT book the stay, and we offer our sincerest good wishes that you find other accommodation which will fulfill your needs.

Needless to say, most of our guests don't have negative "wildlife" experiences here & are not unduly bothered by such concerns (we would not have the incredible reviews and repeat business we do if that were the case!) We profoundly want our guests to be happy and feel secure and we will, of course, help to ameliorate any situation that arises in any reasonable way.

Some guests have said they were surprised that it's either a 20-minute drive to Pahoa for a good selection of groceries and restaurants or 40 minutes to Hilo for everything you could possibly want, and though again, most guests aren't bothered by that, if proximity to those services is important, please be advised of those transit times.House Rules:We don't have many rules here at Pohakunani because Robert doesn't like to tell his guests "No", however those we do have are important, and your checking-in to the property implies your consent to abide by them.

1) Guests are expected to be diligent in conserving both ELECTRICITY (switching off all lights, fans and appliances when not in the immediate area) and WATER (showers of reasonable length, etc.) Hawaii has the highest electric rates in the nation, unfortunately generating most of it's power with fossil fuels, and we sometimes experience months of drought conditions, so your assistance in our conservation effort is greatly appreciated.

2) Only registered guests are allowed on the property unless prior and specific arrangements have been made (and for which there may be additional charges and/or terms.) Guests who have paid to partake in the privacy of a calm and relaxing environment deserve to enjoy it, and the additional liability created by extraneous guests is unacceptable.

3) We do allow weddings and other parties and functions, and the property can be the perfect place to host them, but these must be separately arranged and priced, and no right to hold gatherings of any number or description should be inferred by your reservation of a stay.

4) No commercial photography or video is allowed anywhere on the property at any time unless by prior arrangement and for which location and commission fees may apply. This includes any images either still or moving that are not strictly for personal use. Pohakunani is a great location for commercials and corporate videos, and we'll be happy to discuss that with you.

5) Smoking is permitted outside the units only, and please be mindful of others who may be downwind of you.

6) Any music, noise or festive vacation behavior such as overly boisterous laughter or the gleeful playtime shouts of children must be appropriately modulated and will be unacceptable after dark or at anytime it might disturb the peaceful enjoyment of neighbors or other guests. The architecture of the property, being mostly hard surfaces, acts like a megaphone for most any sound, and the luxurious peace and quiet is something that guests treasure, so please help us maintain that quality for everyone's enjoyment.

7) We depend on you to let us know if anything is out of order, broken, or otherwise deficient so that we may promptly do whatever we can to ameliorate the problem. When you look back on your stay at Pohakunani, we want you to be so utterly content that a 5-Star rating is the only possible option that encapsulates your time here.
