Welcome to the Cooper Union Virtual Gallery for Art & Architecture

Displaying Arts of Students, Alumni and Faculty from
the Schools of Art, Architecture, Engineering and Science.

My name is Drew Knapp. I studied painting, drawing and printmaking at Cooper in the '70s, but have continued to stay active and involved, especially at the end of the year when the student show comes around.

It's always so refreshing and invigorating to return to the roots and take in the fresh, raw energy of new work. Even just dropping by the school for an informal hello when I'm in the neighborhood, I always am filled with that lofty feeling with which I lived every day while enrolled: that I am entering a great place: sacred, hallowed territory for dedicated and creative thinkers.

It's all the more striking when you've been away for a while and you return, you can just sense you're in the presence of greatness.

Recently I visited the alumni website to see what I could find on my fellow students. The information was a bit scarce, but more significantly, there were no photos, no images of what they did then, what they are doing now, what they have done in between. After you graduate from school, and you're off on your own, you sometimes miss the energy and silent camaraderie of seeing your friends at work, smelling the wet linseed oil, watching the process of growth and maturation that so beautifully unfolds from freshman to senior year. Why shouldn't we continue to be aware of what we are doing, of what we have done, and continue to support each other and work together, especially today, with this marvelous medium of the internet ? And why is it necessary to always segregate our work: students from alumni, artists from architects, scientists, and engineers, and all groups from faculty ?

Hence the launch of a virtual gallery for students, faculty and alumni of Cooper Union on A Greater Town.
