FOR your amusement IS a collection of FIVE tables -
EACH with its own HORRIFIC bedside manner …
FROM the BUTCHER table TO your COFFEE table

RED BOAT 1 & 2

SEEMINGLY BLOOD PATE scooped up in the shape of a handsome TANKER like vessel .
EACH with more or less hemoglobin …

SMELL OF OIL # 3
A TABLE swelling , overtaken by the grunge of sludge , fully engorged - collected AND RIPE for the vomiting …

AS stones for building EMPIRES 4 & 5

HUNKS of petrified meat - ready to lay the CORNERSTONES of A NEW democracy !

ASSEMBLED in the shape of the map of IRAQ …

IN the background A war in IRAQ is raging -
THE TITLE -
AN ATTEMPT to BABEL .
… an attempt AT BABBLING ?
… an attempt TO DEPICT BABEL ?
… an attempt TO reconstruct BABEL ?

PERHAPS …
BABEL is the name used in the hebrew bible for the city of BABYLON .
BABEL may be USED many different ways …
AS in - a confused collection of SOUNDS
OR - A scene of CONFUSION .
ALSO - the tower of BABEL refers to THE GATE OF GOD …
SO an attempt to BABEL
MAY translate to - PLAY GOD .

YET , this UTTERING seems to be that of an ANGRY GOD -
IT is violent …

THE wrath of GOD as an aspect of the love of GOD ?
CAN there be love without hate ?
CAN there be WAR without hate ?
CAN there be WAR with LOVE ?

ALL IS FAIR IN LOVE AND WAR .

LET us consider PHILOSOPHICAL INVESTIGATIONS -
ON LANGUAGE : the USE of language dictates MEANING …
THESE TABLES ( as objects with meaning ) pose a problem of TRANSLATION .
DO they SUGGEST anything ?
THESE TABLES present accumulations of PAINT IN a deliberate IMAGE .

QUESTION :
WE HAD to WIN WORLD WAR TWO ;
however , DID we HAVE to go into WAR within IRAQ ?

THESE tables SUGGEST some of these ISSUES …
THEY also bring to mind SOME issues of concern to WITTGENSTEIN ...
A problem of translation - THESE table pieces STRETCH the usual boundaries between painting and sculpture .
OBVIOUSLY they are sculptural AND conceptual …
I like to refer to them as PAINT LOZENGES , so to speak .
THESE table pieces USE massive collections of PAINT as subject matter !
AS if to speak OF what PAINTINGS ARE NOT .

THEY present PAINT as MEAT- LIKE and THEN arranged in the shape of A map of IRAQ …
WHEREBY , the assembled accumulation SUGGESTS : A map of IRAQ served up LIKE castrated or disemboweled LASAGNA .
NOW , let US refer back TO WITTGENSTEIN on language .
WORDS in USE within a context DETERMINES MEANING ; WORDS form A ( public ) language that can change in meaning DEPENDING on context and HOW they are USED !
DO these TABLES serve as a PRIVATE LANGUAGE or a more or less PUBLIC ONE ?
LET us consider the BEETLE IN A BOX …
WE may NOT know JUST what the artist WAS FEELING at the time - YET that is irrelevant .
THESE tables PRESENT PAINT LOZENGES as philosophical questions TO SUCK ON ;
AND these fables BABEL - ON … so to SPEAK .

SCOTT RICHTER - ANTICIPATION
IT IS MAKING ME WAIT - IT IS KEEPING ME WAITING …

BUT seriously folks - SCOTT RICHTER can be very witty …
MANY of his works depict areas of PAINT as inflated …
PAINT LOZENGES as I referred to them .
CONSIDER CLEMENT GREENBERG and the FORMAL paradigm for painting as essentially a flat covered surface .
THESE PAINT LOZENGES are a slap in the face to that reductive viewpoint , they are also tongue in cheek .
THE PAINTINGS if we must call them so , are the result of a CONCEPTUAL / PROCESS ORIENTED FRAMEWORK .
THESE PAINTINGS seem to represent POTENTIAL paintings … with POTENTIAL possibilities .
AS such to depict a specific , SIGNATURE STYLE and a painting as such - would be DECEPTIVE DELUSION .
HIS TITLES are the key ; they suggest possibilities to be IMAGINED .

QUESTION : WHAT IS METAPHOR ?
A carrying over - to transfer …

QUESTION : CAN WE truly intend anything ?
IS communication really possible ?

ONCE again philosophical questions conjured up BY these paintings …
HOWEVER - completely open ended .
NO conclusions IN SIGHT .
IMAGINATION is PARAMOUNT .
POTENTIAL ENERGY vs KINETIC ENERGY .
WE are told that ENERGY can neither be created nor destroyed , it changes from potential to kinetic AND vice - versa …
CONSIDER ARISTOTLE DE ANIMA on the nature of SOUL and the SELF .
ARISTOTLE defined the essence of BEING as the SOUL -
THE SOUL would be POTENTIAL activity .
HOWEVER the soul can not live on nor have a specific location - it is the essence of being .
THAT IS potential activity acted out by the self .
THE SELF may be analogous to kinetic energy - activity carried out by the soul .


NOW , let us consider the ARTISTS role in society - when confronted by war WE may not agree with YET are helpless to stop ?

AS such these works are the end result OF DEFIANCE and the SELF .
QUESTION : WHAT IS defiance ?

DISPOSITION to resist
contrary to
DESPITE …
THIS opens the door to ABSURDISM / EXISTENTIAL philosophy .
THERE is that word again .
CONSIDER ALBERT CAMUS , THE MYTH OF SISYPHUS .
WHEN the HERO is CONSCIOUS of their tragic condition , then and only then they are said to be - HAPPY ...
