Incompiuto Siciliano

an exhibition of the “Unfinished Sicilian” architectural style

by the artist collective

Alterazioni Video

The artist collective Alterazioni Video (featured in this year’s Venice Biennale) presents a selection of photographs, drawings and prints focusing on Sicily’s many unfinished public building sites. The Incompiuto Siciliano project reinterprets the Sicilian landscape by cataloging and defining the style and artistic merit of these sites, particularly those in the town of Giarre, Sicily, which the artists dub “the capital of the Incompiuto Siciliano”—a haunting and beautiful collection of places. Among them are a stadium with stands that are too steep for safe use; a pool that’s almost Olympic size (just one meter too short); a parking garage with no exit; a dam in a dry valley; and a giant theatre located in a tiny town.

This project includes upcoming exhibitions in Rome and Naples; a seminar in Venice, Italy, in November, 2007, where scholars and architects are invited to define the architectural style of Incompiuto Siciliano; and eventually the creation of an archeological park (in cooperation with the local authorities of Giarre) whose guided tourist route will create new development for the local economy.

Alterazioni Video is a collective of five artists (Paololuca Barbieri Marchi, Matteo, Andrea Masu, Alberto Caffarelli, Giacomo Porfiri and Matteo Erenbourg) based in Milan, New York and Shanghai. The group acts as an international network and focuses on issues of disinformation and the relations between truth and representation, legality and illegality, freedom and censorship, mingling art with political activism and utilizing a variety of media. Since 2004 Alterazioni Video has taken part in international events such as Disobedience (Kunst Behetanien Museum and Play Gallery, Berlin, 2005) and Remote Control (MoCA, Shanghai, 2007) with solo exhibitions in locations such as Location One (New York, 2006) and the Chelsea Art Museum (New York 2006). Their work was featured in the 52nd Venice Biennale (2007) curated by Robert Storr.
