The title of this work is ...

CIRCLE SQUARE ,
TRIANGLE , CHAIR .

OBVIOUSLY , the title has an INNER rhyme , one reason for CHAIR ...

Another reason IS that CHAIR is much the same kind of name as SQUARE ...

The WAY to look at THIS work is to LOOK as long as what you SEE is still interesting .
When you , the viewer , gets tired of THIS ...
The viewer HAS many more OPTIONS to choose from - 28, 561 ... to be EXACT .

At which point , the VIEWER can ACTIVELY , choose another reading by changing

the Screen settings ... and INTERACTING with the painting !

YES , I said that ...
THESE are INTERACTIVE / KINETIC paintings ...

INSTALLED at BERRY CAMPBELL gallery
530 WEST 24th. street
NEW YORK , NY .10011

IMAGES may still be VIEWED online at www.berrycampbell.com
YES , they ARE paintings -
the support is broken up so as to ALLOW ...
SIDE images that can CHANGE , via movement AND interactivity !

THE image IS passive ...

THE viewer is ACTIVE ...

Sort of like a PAINTED - ETCH A SKETCH ...
THE support is vertical AND has 4 sides

each vertical strip ALLOWS a change of which side WILL be shown ...

THERE is an overlap
More than just the VIEW of an image

THERE is information that can be GAINED or LOST

THESE constructions are much like a game ...
THE payoff is perhaps like an AH HA moment ...
whereby the recognition IS the alignment between VIEWER and OBJECT ...

ART happens

SOME of the time , WE are just befuddled AND bemused by the PROCESS

of HOW an image BECOMES upon itself ...
CIRCLE is to SQUARE

What TRIANGLE is to CHAIR ...

HIDDEN WITHIN - LURKING beside ...

whatever has TO bear .

BEAR with me ; these syllogisms ARE conducive TO apparitions ...

A gestalt moment of INSIGHT .

A fragmentary residue of an IMAGE

WILL bear fruit ... EVENTUALLY ...
AS since the ARTNESS is something that HAPPENS ...

THE viewer IS the CONDUIT ...
IS the ACTIVE principal in the ABRUPT collision between 3 sides ...

1) is the CONTEXT itself ... the gallery space

2) THE so called ART object

3) The active VIEWER ...
SO the VIEWER completes the ART experience .

MARCEL DUCHAMP questioned absolutism in ART ...

THESE painted constructions question the absolute state OR image OR meaning for the art work ITSELF .

THE art work as a sort of QUESTIONING of the VIEWER'S perception of ART .

AH HA !

THESE painted constructions are actually following a sort of DECONSTRUCTION

or SOCRATIC DIALOG with the viewer's sense of WHAT ART actually IS .
SO boys AND girls - this is a SORT of ALLEGORY of PLATO'S cave ...

THE artist serves as a SOCRATIC questioner

the VIEWER is a sort of INTERLOCUTOR

and becomes CORRUPTED by relativism ...

INTERESTINGLY enough SOCRATES chose death ; rather than LIVE an UNEXAMINED life !

the ARTIST is coaxing US to EXAMINE our notions of ART experience .

A definite PARADOX ensues these permutations of paintings as an ETCH a SKETCH ...

TO deconstruct OR reveal inconsistencies and contradictions WITHIN a system

is rather CORRUPTING ... is it not ?
WE must find our own TRUTHS ...

WE must question OUR OWN dogmas

IT is GOOD for US !

PERHAPS ; ALSO we are to question the very nature of the CAVE itself ?

what MIGHT that BE ?

well , THINK about that ...
Just how STABLE is the GALLERY context ? HMMM....

IS it the REAL world ?
IS it an artifice ?

THIS is for THE VIEWER to decide ...

ALL , for your VIEWING pleasure ...
