Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a place every kayaker ought to visit at least once. It hugs the south shore of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and is known for its dramatic multicolored cliffs. Unusual sandstone formations like Miners Castle and Chapel Rock define the park’s headlands.
Kayaking in the Great Lakes can be a fantastic experience, but it can also be dangerous. Conditions can change rapidly and rescue by boat or helicopter is not guaranteed. There is no shoreline along the cliffs to swim to should you capsize. There have been many expensive rescues where kayakers were ill-equipped or ill-informed. Occasionally, highly experienced kayakers are properly prepared and the Lake will still overpower them. Anyone interested in kayaking Lake Superior should seriously consider the risks, and properly prepare before setting out.
Camping is at Munising Tourist Park Campground in the rustic area at a cost of $25 per night. I reserved site L. They permit 2 tents and 6 people per site. You will need to make your own reservations and coordinate with others regarding sharing a site.
Monday we will paddle together as a group. We will do the 5 mile out & back Paddler's Choice Tour 6 hour tour with Uncle Ducky's, in their tandem kayaks. (www.paddlingmichigan.com). There is a lunch stop on a beach, but lunch is not provided. Early bird price is $119. Regular price is $169.
Tuesday we can split up. Those wanting to do the 8 hour, one-way 14 mile Paddle and Hike tour should make reservations with Uncle Ducky's (PaddlingMichigan.com). The 3 mile hike at the end of the paddle is on level terrain. You will paddle from west to east. Early bird price is $161. Regular price is $229. You will use their tandem kayaks. Lunch is provided. This tour will allow you to paddle the entire length of the Rocks in one day.
Those wanting a shorter paddle on Tuesday might want to reserve the tour offered by PaddlePicturedRocks.com on their brand new kayak-launching boat for $149. On this tour all kayaks and paddlers cruise on a large boat from Uncle Ducky's all the way east to the end of the rock cliffs. You will launch your tandem kayak off of their boat, paddle 5 miles west along the cliffs, then get back onto the large boat and cruise back to Uncle Ducky's. By combining this tour with Monday's tour you should be able to paddle the entire length of the Pictured Rocks or very close to it.
