Even moderate sweating can cause embarrassing situations and an overall lack of confidence in social situations. Hyperhidrosis is defined as heavy sweating. This heavy sweating takes place even when the body is not being physically exerted. Heavy sweating can affect normal areas like the face and underarms, but it can also affect areas like the palms and feet.

A side effect of hyperhidrosis is the odor generated and clothing that becomes unusable due to staining. In addition, the dampness created can cause skin conditions, mildew and foot odor. All these issues combine to impose a significant hardship on sufferers both privately and socially. These problems are compounded in work and school environments that are in close proximity to others and that require any physical activity.

As this becomes a problem, people respond commonly with over the counter products that reduce dampness and odor. The most common products are deodorants, deodorizers and other products that reduce and eliminate odor. Most deodorants on the market also contain additives to eliminate dampness also. This dampness produces the perfect environment for odor causing bacteria. People often try body and foot powders, in areas like the underarm, feet and groin areas in addition to deodorants and antiperspirants to alleviate this problem. Antiperspirants seek to control some of the factors that contribute to the problem of over sweating, but they have varying degrees of success.

Some of these products have prescription strength versions that further eliminate the problems associated with acute hyperhidrosis. However, some of these products carry the risk of being more irritating to the skin than their over the counter counterparts, but can be used in multiple places beyond the traditional underarm application. Hyperhidrosis can be severe enough to cause some people to seek surgical remedies for this situation. However, this treatment is only done on the underarms and has no bearing on other areas that the hyperhidrosis affects. One very effective treatment for hyperhidrosis is treatments with the product that is commonly used in cosmetic treatment called Botox. This a very familiar and popular product for face lifts without surgery. This is also the circumstances in which Botox would be used to treat hyperhidrosis.

No surgery is completely safe, and using Botox is effective, non-surgical and can be used in multiple areas. In addition, the results experienced in treating hyperhidrosis with Botox can last up to a year. This is much longer than prescription or over the counter products without the hassle of applying the products several times a day with only moderate success. It is also less invasive than surgical methods. There are only a few initial shots in the beginning followed by the yearly injections or as often as the doctor prescribes. Botox used in these treatments has the same effect as in its cosmetic uses. Botox relaxes muscles by paralyzing them. This why wrinkles smooth when Botox is used. This is also the reason that the overactive sweat glands will stop producing.

Botox is a brand name for a substance called botulinum toxin. It is approved by the Federal Drug Administration. In its natural form, botulinum toxin is very dangerous and occurs naturally in the environment, but an inert form is used to gain the positive effects of the toxin without any harmful side effects. Because Botox disables the sweat glands, the negative side effects of the heavy sweating problem are almost completely neutralized. This is true for all areas in which Botox is used including the palms of the hands and the soles of feet. Botox has become very popular in recent years and uses for the product are still being discovered.
