La Puerta Rosada is located in Barrio del Tecolote, an unpolished gem of San Miguel de Allende. Part of the historical center, it is a small Mexican village within the larger town. One of the oldest neighborhoods, Tecolote is unique in San Miguel due to its narrow cobblestone streets, or "callejones" -- wide enough for a burro, but not for a car. While most El Centro has been gentrified, with the sound of cars and buses, night clubs and revelers, replacing those of old Mexico, Tecolote retains its authentic flavor. families still live here and children play in the streets. Roosters greet the sun daily. Dogs alert the neighborhood to strangers on the callejones. Tecolote is not for everybody. Walking is required, and some of the alleys are steep. Fortunately, if you are open and smile, the local kids will gladly help you with your bags for a small tip. And a little bit of walking is worth it, if you want to experience a bit of Old Mexico in the heart of one of Mexico's most beautiful colonial towns.
While San Miguel centro is charming with its beautifully restored mansions, the pedestrian only nature of tecolote has slowed the gentrification.Get the full listing »
