My house is a 17th century farmhouse, located in the heart of the oldest historic village of Gozo, Gharb. You will enjoy Babouche because of the unique artistic conversion. "Babouche" is a traditional Bedouin slipper, slow pace days. You get an experience of living in an active historical village with its enchanting traditions and customs. This is a house of peace, color and joy where holiday memories are made ... and never fade. As an artist, the houses that I have created around the world are becoming ports of color, imagination and creativity. I design houses that are practical and theatrical. This is the basis of the design behind my newest house, Babouche, where you can enjoy fantasy and creativity in a world of 1001 nights.
Upon your arrival I will provide you with a guide that will explain in detail all local amenities, attractions, restaurants and activities.
The entrance takes you into a colorful central inner courtyard with a cascade pool, sun loungers, a bench, a BBQ and exotic plants. The courtyard, which is only overlooked by the balconies of the three bedrooms above, leads you to the living room and an additional entrance into the kitchen.
The kitchen is equipped in what was traditionally the stable. Five large arches and centuries old stones were carefully restored. The meter-thick stone walls keep the room cool in the summer and the hand stenciled Mediterranean tiles create playful drama. The kitchen has a large Panasonic fridge freezer, a Smeg stove, a Panasonic 7kg washing machine, a dishwasher, microwave, toaster and electric kettle. The crockery and cutlery are all Italian and no less colorful. A rustic oval table seats six people comfortably.
The kitchen leads through two arches into the large living room which was the mill room, with a number of impressive arches and details from the 17th century. The living room overlooks the pool through a curved estimated doorway. It is furnished with comfortable sofas, club chairs, a piano, a fireplace and a desk. Here too, the floor is hand stenciled and repeats the sunny colors of the courtyard.
On top of the floor, the stonework is more delicate, the windows are large, the colors are more subdued and the ceilings are very high. On the landing, I created a library that offers a wide range of books and DVDs, a flat-screen TV and a DVD player. A skylight overflows this space with light.
The landing gives access to the three large air-conditioning, ensuite bedrooms. Each bedroom has its own balcony overlooking the pool and the courtyard.
The width of the three double beds vary in King 160cm, Super King 180cm and emperor 200cm. The beds are two meters long and were made to measure by local artisans. Thick box spring mattresses offer the ultimate in comfort. Luxurious fine Egyptian cotton linens and Laura Ashley bath towels compliment the experience of luxury.
The master suite has a shower and a freestanding slipper bath. This suite also has the largest balcony and is equipped with two comfortable sun deck chairs.
During the warm months of the year the locals (and I) walk barefoot around their houses and gardens. Babouche will tempt you to do the same. During the cooler season, and thanks to a Southwest location of the farm, Babouche is naturally warm and cozy. A fireplace is in the middle of the living room.
There is Wifi throughout the house, which is free.
We do not believe in installing a coin system or a card top up system for our guests to use the air conditioning and electricity in general. We simply sign you in together with your arrival of the current electric meter. At the end of your stay we also take the end number of the meter together again and we charge our guests 12 cents per kilowatt unit used.
Upon arrival we offer you a welcome basket and a local wine to start your holiday in a cozy and homely way. The village shops and supermarkets on Gozo are open 6/7 days a week.
A stone's throw from Babouche I live with my husband and a cat. My studio is there too, so if you need help or you want to visit an artist's studio, you will always find me.
Babouche is one of the oldest farms in the heart of the historic village of Gharb. Gharb is the oldest, most traditional and picturesque village on Gozo. the villager's life evolves around family, agriculture, fishing, ecclesiastical activities and tourism. There are 5 restaurants in the immediate vicinity. We have two handy family shops in the middle of the church square, a small supermarket and a pharmacy at the village entrance. A holistic center is just around the corner from the house. There is a bus stop, also through the church square. Every day several trucks pass by in the street to hear the horn for attention. One sells fresh fish, the other freshly baked bread and pastries and yet another supermarket truck with fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as eggs, canned food and dry goods.
From Babouche you can walk or take a short drive to the famous Dwerja or walk around the hiking trails of the most beautiful country and seasides of Gozo. The hiking trails with the most beautiful landscape of the island of Gozo start at the end of the street. Wied-il-Mielah cliffs with "the second window", the lighthouse valley, San Dimitri chapel valley and the more famous Dweira are all within walking distance of the house.
Finally, No pets allowed, sorry. Do not smoke inside the house.
I strongly advise you to opt for the airport transfer, which takes care of your luggage and finding the way to the ferry all the way to the house without any worries. I can organize this for you. Please let me know when you make your reservation. Local transport is very personal. You can rent a car or simply use public transport, which is very useful and highly appreciated by tourists.
I hope to welcome you in our beautiful house, in the village we love most, on the island we love most.
