Hyundai is living up to its motto on its web site, “new thinking, new possibilities”, by initiating a collaboration with the U.S. House of Representatives Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Caucus along with the Department of Energy on their introduction of the first mass-produced fuel cell vehicles in the United States to the retail car market.

Hyundai executives announced in September 2014 that they are excited to be partnering with Congressional leaders and the Department of Energy, not only on the development of clean energy technologies and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, but also on the development of the hydrogen infrastructure needed to support these clean energy vehicles throughout the United States. Representative John Larson, the House Hydrogen Fuel Cell Caucus Co-Chair, and a strong advocate for fuel cell technology, is heading the efforts to expedite hydrogen and fuel cell energy technologies through investment and infrastructure tax credits.

Currently Hyundai is offering their Tucson Fuel Cell to interested customers in the Los Angeles/Orange County region of California. The Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell can be leased for thirty-six months for $499 per month with a $2999 down payment. Although $499 may seem a bit pricey to some consumers, the monthly leasing amount includes unlimited free hydrogen refueling along with Hyundai’s At Your Service Valet Maintenance at no extra cost. If your leased Tucson Fuel Cell requires service at any time, At Your Service Valet Maintenance means that a Hyundai dealer will pick up the vehicle, provide you with a loaner car and will return the repaired vehicle to the owner’s business or home at no extra charge.

The Tucson Fuel Cell creates its own electricity from hydrogen and has the following features: no greenhouse gas emissions only water vapor, a quiet engine, a 265 mile driving range, refueling in under ten minutes, minimal cold weather effect, no moving parts in the fuel cell stack, instant electric motor torque, more than 2 million test miles since 2000, along with extensive, successful crash, leak and fire testing. Hyundai began mass production of the Tucson Fuel Cell for the United States market in April 2014.

The benefits of hydrogen energy are that it produces no harmful emissions, is readily available, is environmentally friendly and non-toxic, is fuel efficient and, last but not least, is renewable unlike fossil fuels. Supplies of hydrogen energy are unlimited and can be produced domestically in the United States in various ways such as directly from water and by using electrolysis to split the hydrogen molecules using energy from renewable sources such as solar or wind.

The state of California in October 2013 approved a plan to develop one hundred hydrogen refueling stations throughout the state over the next few years. Anyone who may be interested in learning more about the Tucson Fuel Cell can visit Hyundai.com for more information. The availability of the Tucson Fuel Cell will coincide with the development of hydrogen refueling stations throughout the United States.
