Experience Tuscany at a farmhouse steeped in history. The foundations of villa Giotto date to the 14th century, and the six-bedroom stone farmhouse has been renovated with an eye to keeping its centuries-old charms. Set on an estate that produces olive oil and wine, the villa offers rural peace and quiet but is just 20 miles northeast of Florence.
Looking out from the villas grounds, its hard to see any signs of modern lifeunless you count the inground pool surrounded by chaise longues. The original stables have been converted into an outdoor area with built-in barbecue, and a covered table and chairs is the perfect shady al fresco dining spot. The main house has its own 21st-century amenities, like an Internet connection, ping-pong room and mosquito nets.
Inside the villas vine-covered stone walls, floral and gingham fabrics, white walls and beamed ceilings play up its rustic charm but feel open and breezy. Gather around in the cheery living room, which has plenty of comfortable seating, or the dining room, where a buffet features vintage dishes and tins. The modern kitchen has both modern appliances and an old-fashioned fireplace large enough to sit inside.
Villa Giottos six bedrooms are decorated in equally charming fashion and have beautiful views of the landscape. There are two bedrooms with double beds, and two bedrooms with two twin beds each. The fifth bedroom has two twin beds plus a single bed perfect for children. In the sixth bedroom, youll find a French bed and en-suite bathroom.
The villa is named for Renaissance painter Giotto, who was born in the village of Vicchio, just over a mile away. Today, youll find amenities like a grocery store, tennis court and train station in the village. Active guests will want to check out the stables 3 miles away, the sailing and windsurfing on Lake Bilancino, 12 miles away, or the golf course 15 miles away. For day-trippers, its an easy jaunt to Florence, 20 miles away.
