Santa 10 is an ancient medieval watchtower (circa XIV a.d) sits on a hillside of olive trees and vineyard facing Siena. The Tower still stands high on a hill overlooking the surrounding countryside, from where the gates of the city of Siena are visible as well as vineyards, olive groves and the ancient pilgrimage route- the Francigena.
The cellar was excavated in the tuff (the indigenous earth of the area) featuring an imposing vaulted ceiling and it is still being used today (this is where organic wines and a brandy are produced). Guests can still walk along a little path, which was used to escape from the Tower.
The east side of the Tower was enlarged in 1800.
Santa Dieci is 2.5 km from one of the ancient gates of the city of Siena and it is one of the few wineries in the area that lies within the jurisdiction of the City of Siena.
All natural, local materials were used in the renovation of the buildings so that their beauty and the integrity of their history could be maintained. The area where we live (Santa Regina) must respect all regulations governing the protection and integrity of the natural landscape.
The flooring was restored with a particular mix of mortar and the local earth and oxides were applied to vary their colours. The staircases feature travertine from the mines in Rapolano. In order to maintain the large vaults and ancient beams, we rebuilt the roof by using techniques that fostered natural insultation and air circulation.
The perimeter walls were entirely covered with a 10 cm layer of cork, which allows for acoustic and thermic insulation. The farm house is reassuringly warm in the winter and blessedly cool in the summer, not only on account of the restoration work but also because the ancient stone walls are quite thick and filled with the local tuff earth reaching a metre in diametre.
The plaster, which was used on the buildings inside and outside, were made with natural limestone, so the walls are well ventilated. The bathroom walls and the flooring were made with an eco-friendly mix of mortar composed of copper powder, local earth and oxides. We left the red bricks of the ancient Tower as is in keeping with the other buildings in our area and respecting the historical architecture of the period when it was built. The part of the Tower that was enlarged was covered with limestone and a coffee coloured brown earth.
The entire building is 250 squared metres and is divided on 3 floors. It was originally decorated with a mix of modern and antique family furniture but over the years, interesting objects were added a little at a time by pieces we collected on our family trips all over the world. Pieces of artwork in pastels painted by Gianni, which evoke unexpected mathematical themes, bring a personal touch to the Tower.
The villa and the tower are really comfortable. Overall, there are three levels for a carpet area of about 250 square meters. In detail:
On the GROUND FLOOR there is a large kitchen with a 10-seater dining table, a cozy guest bath and a huge living room with a fireplace, books and pictures of our travels. This floor has two glass doors to access a terrace garden which is connected to a 500 square meter walled garden. The garden is entirely surrounded by a stonewall.
The terrace is made of ancient bricks and runs the length of the farmhouse. You can enjoy a wonderful meal on the terrace sitting around the table, canopied by soft curtains, or just lie around reading a book or sipping an aperitif with the view of the Torre del Mangia and the Siena cityscape in full view.
The garden features three ancient trees (a cedar, a sycamore and a maple tree) under which there are tables and chairs where you can enjoy the shade and have breakfast on hot days. You can also discover many kinds of flowering plants: hydrangeas in the acidic area under the cedar tree, ancient rose and lavender bushes scattered around the rest of the grounds. In a private area of the garden, you will find a heated stone jacuzzi which is also illuminated at night. This relaxing area is shaded and it makes for quite a pleasant experience, letting all the tensions go as you admire the Siena cityscape.
On the FIRST FLOOR there are three bedrooms and a fully equipped laundry room. We have a large double room with a private bathroom with shower. There is also a double room which shares the bathroom with a third room furnished with a 2 people bunk bed. The first bedroom also offers a lovely balcony from where you can see a stunning view of the underlying valley and the Siena cityscape.
On the first floor, there is also a laundry room with all the amenities: washing machine, drier, ironing board and iron.
On the SECOND FLOOR there is a big double room with private bathroom. There is also a mezzanine with an ancient Indonesian bed to be used as a sofa or additional bed. The room has four windows, one for each side, so it overlooks the entire valley. This part of the tower has air conditioning.
THE GUEST HOUSE "LEMON HOUSE":
