Towns of the Middle Ages

The City of Certaldo located halfway between the cities of Florence (Firenze) and Siena (Siena) is on a hill at 130 meters and is still surrounded by ancient walls dating from the XIII and XIV century. The houses are in red brick and tiles: the reddish color, which, to the sun, is soft, warm tones, is one of the characteristics of a center in what it would seem that the time has stopped. You can reach the upper side on foot in 10 min or by cable car from the main square. The old part of the town is incredibly well preserved offering monuments of great historical interest.
The position provides a splendid view stretching from the hills of the Val d'Elsa to San Gimignano.

Certaldo is also very famous for being the birthplace of Giovanni Boccaccio, one of the greatest Italian poets and medieval men of letters, author of the notable novellas collection "Decameron" dated XIV century. It's divided in an upper medieval town - called "Rione Castello" enclosed in medieval surroundings - and a lower more modern part.

San Miniato is situated on the Francigena Road (the road that connected, in the Middle Age, with Rome and Northern Europe) at the intersection of Florence, Pisa and Siena .
Pretty mediaeval village preserving its historical centre set on the hill top with the Cathedral, the Episcopal Palace, the Municipal Palace and the Tower Fortress dominating all the surrounding Arno Valley.

San Miniato has a thirteenth century castle which was built under Frederick II, and a Romanesque cathedral dating from the twelfth century, whose facade is inlaid majolica. Varied landscape , well-kept land completed by the fertility of a soil rich of typical products such as wine, meat and white truffle. For that peculiarity it is a wonderful destination year-round, particularly in November when the annual truffle festival fills in the ancient streets with parades, concerts , artisans vendors and of course of the aroma of the most exclusive mushroom.

Lucca is just a little jewel in Tuscany. The city is surrounded by fortified walls in an area of 4km is the ideal city for pedestrians to explore history through the streets, churches, towers and palaces without being disturbed by the cars except the people allowed. A free city after 1628 when democracy turns into oligarchy until the conquest by the French in 1799. Napoleon made it a principality for his sister Elisa Baciocchi A black panther symbol of freedom of the city. A paradise of cities in stones, red brick house, churches Carrara marble in different colors.
Lots of green outside the walls provide the opportunity for long walks.
As the birthplace of Puccini, the composer liked most of the world, they are organized concerts throughout the year and the Lyric Opera Puccini is represented during the summer in Torre del Lago Puccini, a charming and romantic Lake as the musical selections.
During the month of July big pop rock festival "Lucca Summerfestival" that lasts the entire month, with big names and international groups. Very popular.
During the winter festival Lucca Cartoon (Lucca Comics and Games) is considered the largest international gathering.
In addition the Versilia coast , nice corner for beach and night life, which lies between Carrara and Viareggio bordered on the northeast by the Apuane Alps to a long beach protected by a lush pine forest, with comfortable shopping promenade , local clubs and well known restaurants.

And in the vicinity of the sea, the small town Pietrasanta, the cradle of the art of sculpture and the work of marble, meeting place for many artists and sculptors from Michelangelo to the contemporaries as Henry Moore, Miró and Igor Mitoraj and Botero, he even lives in Pietrasanta and its pieces lie on the Cathedral Square, the Dom St. Martin XII century.
