The city of Lucca is one of the jewels of Tuscany, a point of arrival or passage which can not be overlooked for its artistic beauty and charming atmosphere. After being passing in Lucca, many foreign visitors have chosen the city as their second residence. Visit Lucca is plunging through the narrow streets of one of the oldest best preserved historic centers, walking three famous walls, taste the local cuisine in the many taverns and take part in the many artistic and cultural events organized. Anyone visiting the city of Lucca is positively surprised by the opportunity to live in peace the different aspects of the old town and its surroundings.
The visit can start with a walk on the Walls of Lucca, built in the sixteenth century and the period used as the nineteenth century urban park, enclose the old town and are the true symbol of the city recognized for its particularity in the world. Preserved intact to this day, the walls of Lucca are considered an active resource for citizens, along the 4 km, live their leisure time in the shade of ancient trees.
Visible from the walls, stand out above the roofs citizens the Guinigi Tower, the famous tree-lined tower built around 1390 by the powerful family from Lucca Guinigi, and the Clock Tower from the medieval times and took the city council of the city.
The city of Lucca is traditionally known as the city of a hundred churches for the great number of places of worship of various different eras present within the walls. This name is no coincidence when you consider that, in addition to the large number of official churches churches, each mansion has its own chapel. Currently, many churches have been desecrated, but still stand out some very interesting religious buildings. The Lucca Cathedral, the Cathedral of San Martino, founded by San Frediano in the eleventh century. and later restructured, in addition to the architectural beauty of the medieval and Renaissance, contains masterpieces by Nicola Pisano, Jacopo della Quercia and Tintoretto. Inside it is also preserved the ancient crucifix of the Holy Face and the tomb of Ilaria del Carretto. Famous for its central location is the church of San Michele in Foro, marble structure built from 1070 representing an example of Pisa and Lucca architecture, overlooks the square in the ancient Roman forum and still is seen as a meeting point of city life. From the church of San Michele along the main street, Via Fillungo, you get comfortably to the Basilica of San Frediano, one of the oldest religious buildings and the still active core procession of the Holy Cross on 13 September.
While offering its visitors the visit places rich in history and culture, the city of Lucca in recent years has decided to open up to new promoting festivals and exhibitions that have gained international exposure to interest and avant-garde. The traditional Lucca Antiques Market, alongside therefore important contemporary blockbuster initiatives. Among these the Lucca Comics & Games, the international festival of comics recognized as the best in Italian level that involves the whole city in the days between October and November, the Summer Festival, proven musical event in July makes Piazza Napoleone a stage for artists internationally renowned, and LUCCA Digital pHOTO fest, important festival of photography and visual art that is on display from late November until mid-December.
Continuing the tour of the city of Lucca has suggested a walk in Via Fillungo, the main street that cuts through the historic center and on which encircle the medieval buildings. The heart of the commercial and artisan Lucca, Via Fillungo cleverly combines ancient and modern giving visitors an interesting visit for a look on the ancient crafts, view the preservation of jewelery and leather goods of the past, and to make shopping simple. Stop not to forget is the outlet of the Amphitheatre Square, today called the Market Square, where once stood the ancient Roman forum. Access to the square is allowed by the four ports located at the ancient entrances. The Amphitheatre Square is a jewel for the city of Lucca with its cozy restaurants and its workshops of painters and artists. The feast of April 27 to pay homage to the Patron Saint Zita dye Amphitheatre Square of colors with the traditional flower market.
In the visit of Lucca is easily falls in Piazza Napoleone, called by the citizens of Lucca Piazza Grande, it has always been a space born to be the center of political power with the Doge's Palace placed at his side, and now the seat of the Province. The arrangement of the square is very different from the original. The works promoted in the nineteenth century by Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, to pay tribute to his brother Napoleon Bonaparte, led to the current structure of the square that recalls, for some sections, the main Paris expanses. Today, Piazza Napoleone is seen mostly as one of the focal points of the city of Lucca for its spacious and elegant setting.
Trying to make the most of its historic buildings, the city of Lucca has transformed various mansions in major museums and major public facilities. Among these we recommend a visit to the Palazzo Mansi, the seventeenth-century building that houses the National Art Gallery collection consists of fine Italian and foreign works from the Renaissance and the eighteenth century.
