La Lombarda is our beautifully restored traditional 18th century Tuscan farmhouse in the comune of Cortona. La Stufa is a charming two bedroom apartment with wood-beamed ceilings and terracotta floors. There is a comfortable sofa and two armchairs in the lounge, TV, DVD, books, games and videos for your enjoyment. The fully fitted kitchen/diner has a table and chairs, fridge/freezer, oven and hob and washing machine. On the first floor there is a pretty twin/double bedroom, with views over vineyards and olive trees, with en suite shower room. There is a second double bedroom with views towards Cortona and a further shower room. From the lounge french doors open onto your own private patio, where you can enjoy al fresco meals or simply relax with a glass of wine.
The La Stufa apartment was, formerly, a tobacco-drying tower which was added to the famhouse in the late 1800's. Tobacco was widely grown in the area before the subsidies were removed and was reputedly of a very high quality. Tobacco leaves would be hung from the beams around the inside walls of the tower and dried by the heat of the fire built in the centre of the earth floor.
The farmhouse is set in a rural landscape and is an oasis to which to return after a day's sightseeing. Relax by the pool and soak up the sun or sit under the jasmine covered pergola with a good book and a glass of local wine taking in the view of rolling countryside.
La Lombarda is ideally placed within easy reach of Tuscany's and Umbria's wealth of art and cultural centres. Cortona, nestling on its hillside is just 20 minutes away, with its medieval cobbled lanes is a delightful and atmospheric town. Siena, Montepulciano, Pienza, Perugia, Assisi and Lake Trasimeno are each within a one hour scenic drive. Florence and Montalcino are a little further afield, but less than 1 and half hours by car.
This part of Italy is a must for the holiday-maker seeking immersion in art, architecture and fine food and wine. For the more energetic there is a wealth of beautiful scenery in which to walk or cycle.
