Derriana Lodge: Relaxation and adventure with stunning lake and mountain views

Located in: Waterville
Derriana Lodge is a cosy hideaway in one of Kerry's most beautiful locations close to the Kerry Way and the famous Wild Atlantic Way. The area is a paradise for angling, both sea and freshwater, hill walking, bird watching and as a retreat for artists and photographers or just to get away from it all.

The local area is rich in geological history with its glaciated lakes and valleys. The Lodge is situated less than ten miles from the town of Waterville. Set in 11 acres this is a great place for families and couples to relax and enjoy both the natural beauty of the immediate countryside and the mountain views. The Lodge is comfortable and homely with three good size bedrooms, and two bathrooms (one en-suite) and a separate WC. The open-plan ground floor with beautiful slate floors incorporating two fireplaces, one with log-burning stove, plus electric radiators make it a warm and welcoming place to stay. Lovely old pine furniture adds to the atmosphere and with a utility room and turf store (free turf allocation and kindling) all your comforts are catered for making it perfect for a family or group of friends looking for an activity holiday with angling and mountain walking just outside the front door.

The lovely coastal towns of Waterville and Derrynane enjoy beautiful sandy beaches which are perfect for a family frolic, there are also salmon and trout fishing and angling available for those looking to cast a line, and why not try the two world-class golf courses waiting to challenge you. With the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Skellig Rocks and monastery just a boat ride away, stand tall and let your senses come alive with the majestic sights, and taste the salty sea air whilst the wind whips across to meet you from the Atlantic.

Overall a very special place awaits you in Kerry and the people have to be experienced to see Ireland in its true sense with friendly and welcoming eateries and old style bars near at hand.

County Kerry is an area of unspoiled beauty with a landscape that has changed little throughout its post glacial existence. The lakes and rivers are home to a rich and varied ecosystem with wild brown trout abundant and Atlantic salmon and sea trout present in numbers. The wild brown trout are abundant in all of the lakes and rivers of the area. While generally not large they more than make up for their size by their sheer abundance and willingness to take a fly. Traditional wet fly fishing from a drifting boat will generally produce excellent results and dry fly fishing can produce spectacular catches when conditions suit. Fly fishing days can be arranged for you if required.

Atlantic salmon and sea trout arrive in the lakes from late spring with May to October seeing the best of the fishing. The Waterville system of which Lough Derriana is one of the most important lakes is home to Ireland's largest sea trout and fishing in April to June gives the angler the chance of catching a fish of a lifetime.

Derriana Lodge is ideally suited to explore the Iveragh peninsula which covers an extensive area of Kerry encompassing over 1900 square kilometres of wilderness, lakes, rivers and charming villages and towns. The famous Kerry Way is close to the Lodge and is a large waymarked trail of over 230 km. The trail is a circular route and goes around and through the Macgillicuddy Reeks which have Ireland's highest peaks at over 1000 metres. The total ascent is over 5000 metres and terrain can be wet and isolated.

The local area around the Lodge has a wonderful moorland landscape with Atlantic blanket bog and an extensive array of glaciated lakes and rivers. Access to the mountains is easy with a number of loop walks in the area, one in particular, adjacent to Lough Currane with a 20 Km walk starting 10 minutes from the Lodge.

The area is rich in wildlife with Mountain Hares abundant while Red Grouse can be heard on the surrounding hillsides. The area is famous for sightings of the White Tailed Eagle which was re-introduced into the area after an absence of over 100 years. If walking from November to January it is a time of immense activity in the areas rivers and streams with wild trout and Atlantic salmon spawning and fish can be observed at most locations where gravel abounds.
