Enjoy history and comfort all in one in this restored traditional village home in the Cretan mountain village of Drapanos. This is the real Crete, with sweeping mountain and village views above the sea.
Traditional Cretan home with all the outdoor space you could wish for: a beautiful garden full of Mediterranean plants, a secluded courtyard for quiet and introspection, and even a small secret garden with fruit-bearing trees, lemon and pomegranate!
The home is set conveniently on the edge of the village of Drapanos, where visitors can enjoy a year-round mini market, taverna (with delicious and affordable country traditional food), and the bus station just steps away from the house. The village is perfect for countryside local walks and hikes, and also features a second taverna and a bar with a swimming pool for your use within walking distance.
The spacious and airy house has wonderful mountain views and is only a 10-minute drive from good beaches and holiday cafes, tavernas, and shops.
The home’s stone wall and wooden gates open to a large garden courtyard with table and chairs, a perfect place to eat and relax. Entering the house into the living room, one is greeted by a warm and comfortable home, featuring restored historical architectural details, a Cretan arch, and a fireplace. There is also a comfortable windowed dining area with table for six.
On the ground floor of the house are two bedrooms. The second en-suite bedroom can be totally self-contained if necessary, as it has separate access from the courtyard as well. The kitchen, which connects to the main house from one side and to the garden apartment from the other, features an eat-in breakfast table and is fully equipped for all holiday needs, including a full fridge, cooker, electric stove top, water boiler, and coffeemaker.
The shady inner courtyard is accessed from the living room, upon which the second ground floor bedroom looks.
A solid wooden staircase leads to a landing area with traditional-style sofa bed, which pulls out into two single beds. The 1st floor landing also features a perfect desk to write, work, create, or communicate from, while overlooking the village and mountainside. Adjacent is a large family bathroom with Jacuzzi hot tub, and finally the grand master bedroom, which has access to the huge sun terrace, perfect for sitting and relaxing, sunbathing and lounging, overlooking the village and the fantastic mountain views. The terrace is also accessible by an iron staircase from the courtyard.
The two courtyards offer sun and shade at different times of the day, with garden furniture and a barbecue.
The village of Drapanos is perched above the sea overlooking the valley below, flanked by Drapanokefalas Mountain and the dramatic White Mountains in the backdrop.
In the village itself visitors will find there is everything one may need to be self-sustained. There is a bus stop, a mini market, and one of the best local tavernas around!
From the village there are several beaches to be visited, depending on one’s likes and moods. Gordeli Beach, with its tavern is at the base of a country road less than 10 minutes by car, for an off-the-beaten bath adventure that only locals know about!
Another place also off the map, about 15 minutes driving, is Ombros Gialos beach (20min) and tavern. Here you can enjoy your drinks and food by the sea, in a unique setting.
For those seeking relaxation on a sandy beach, with shallow clean waters, perfect for children, there is the Blue Flag awarded Almyrida Beach, 15 minutes drive from the house. There are also watersports, such as windsurfing and canoeing, for which lessons also are provided. Almyrida is a great place for local fish tavernas, bars, cafes, and great nightlife.
In addition to Almyrida beach, there are also the gulf of Kera (15 min), Georgioupolis Beach (40 min), as well as Kalyves (20min), also with many taverns and nightclubs. In Kalyves can also be found one of the best souvlaki places of the area.
