This lovely house with its pretty blue shutters was built in 1870. It is three stories high with three well-appointed bedrooms, shower room and separate WC. The kitchenette includes a washing machine, fridge, cooker and toaster.
The living room is furnished with beautiful antique and period furniture…pictures, tapestries, porcelain and many collectibles and curios in the bourgeoisie 1900 style.
There is also a television lounge with Freesat UK TV, a dining area with seating for six people, an office for writing your memoirs and a coffee corner to sit and relax in.
There is electric heating, but the thick walls ensure it is cool in summer and warm in winter.
Verruyes is in department 79310 in the Deux-Sevres area of Poitou-Charentes in South West France. This area is renowned for having one of the most pleasant climates in France with long, hot summers and is described as a micro-climate, being the hottest and sunniest place of the whole Atlantic coast. The village itself has a fine patisserie and a bar/Post Office. If you like a quiet and peaceful holiday, with few cars and few people, in an area with no pollution or heavy industry, yet within easily reachable distance from the coast and other places of interest, then this is for you. It’s a rural area with mainly small farms engaged in lamb and beef production and the countryside is great for walking or cycling.
Things to do
The village boasts a large lake of around 7 hectares, about 5 minutes’ walk from the house, or a 1 minute drive! Part of the lake is reserved for fishing and day tickets can be obtained from the local Mairie’s office). You can fish for carp, roach, tench and trout.
The other part of the lake is for swimming and boating and there is a kiddie’s playground, picnic area, tennis, parking and a very nice restaurant. In the summer you can hire a paddle boat.
For other areas of interest, there is a fine 18-hole golf course at Maziere-en-Gatine, which is only five minutes journey by car. There is a shop and restaurant on site.
Parthenay is a medieval, fortified town, only a 15 minute drive away. The town is constructed in a bend of the River Thouet, which surrounds the town on the west and north sides. For those who like history, there is the remains of a chateau. Parthenay has an array of well-known shops and there is a regular market on Wednesdays.
La Rochelle, Poitiers and Futuroscope are all approximately 1 hour’s drive and the vineyards at Bordeaux are worth a day out.
An information leaflet will be waiting for you when you arrive, giving you lots of local information, such as a French restaurant where you can eat as much as you like, current price 9.50 euros with free bottles of red, white and rose wine….yes, the wine is free!
