Beautiful French countryside, with vineyards, historic villages and none of the crowds usually associated with the South of France. Warm throughout the summer, with lovely al-fresco dining, the region boasts majestic castles and ruins, rolling hills, and stunning scenery at every turn.
The surrounding area is famous for Cathar castles and vineyards, and the local radius ( 30 minutes' drive) features a number of beautiful, famous villages like Mirepoix and Lagrasse. The coast near Narbonne is less than one hour away by car. And skiing in the winter is well catered-for, with the Pyrenees just a couple of hours away. The nearby lake, Lac de la Cavayere (accessible by bus), has outdoor water sports throughout summer but is nice to walk round any time of year.
The castle itself, with its quirky shops and lovely restaurants, plays host to year-round festivals and world-class live music. Past acts at the Summer Festival have included Sting, Elton John, James Blunt, Madness, Massive Attack, Lana Del Rey and Franz Ferdinand .Outside of the historic city, the Bastide St. Louis - a grid of shops, historic buildings, and the Place Carnot marketplace, with its Saturday market and outdoor cafes - is just a short walk across the beautiful Pont Vieux .The castle is the setting for the world-renowned Bastille Day firework celebrations in July, which can be seen from the property's private garden - glass of wine in hand!
