17th Century Cottage with Character, Stunning Views and Curvaceous Swimming Pool

Located in: Nanteuil Auriac De Bourzac
Located within a pretty south-facing former farm property, Bluebell Cottage is a self-catering gite formed from a joined pair of small farm-workers cottages, with newer bedroom and bathroom extensions. With exposed beams, it retains a traditional, rustic French ambiance, and is idyllically situated in the picturesque landscape of ‘Perigord Vert’. Located atop a tranquil hillside with breathtaking views over sunflower and maize fields, the property is set in 2 acres of secluded mature gardens, delightfully populated with fruit and nut trees and an abundance of flowers. You have a curvaceous 10 metre (33 feet) swimming pool all to yourself (complying with the latest safety standards) set in a pleasant but private area, with an adjacent grassed play area for smaller children with swings etc. There are assorted sitting areas for eating in the sunshine, or in the shade, with barbecues and plenty of sun-loungers. Twice-weekly bread delivery. This is a dog-free zone.

THE LOCALITY:
Situated between Angoulême (45 mins) and Périgueux (45 mins), there is easy access to the pretty traditional villages on the River Dronne – Aubeterre-sur-Dronne (20 mins), Brantôme (30 mins) and Bourdeilles (30 mins); all perfect for bathing, canoeing or just exploring at your leisure. The renowned market town of Riberac (20 mins) with its Friday market (and evening markets in July/Aug) is a definite must. Sarlat, the historic Lascaux Caves, Cognac, the Atlantic Beaches and Bordeaux also make excellent days out.

COAST/BEACHES:
There are various popular lake & river beaches close by, with family facilities. The Atlantic beaches are 2 hours drive away (90 kilometres) and offer mile upon mile of golden sandy beaches. The principal towns here are La Rochelle, Royan and Rochefort. Also here is the popular island of Île de Ré, accessible by road bridge (Fort Bouyard is nearby), and the largest European dunes of Pyla (Pilat), in Arcachon bay.

LOCAL ACTIVITIES:
The local area is rich for walking, with cafes, bars, restaurants and a nature reserve (Les Anciennes Tourbières) within walking distance; and cyclists discover endless charming rides in all directions. Local villages, including Champagne, Salles-Lavalette & Gout-Rossignol, will provide fresh bread & other provisions, post office, bar, hairdressers etc.
The nearest town is Verteillac, 8 kilometres away, with bank, boulangerie, post office, large general store, bars, cafes, & several excellent restaurants. Also a chemists, doctors and dentist, and a major Sunday flea/antique market every month. Riberac is the nearest big town with everything - 5 supermarkets, cafes, shops, restaurants, banks, etc, and canoeing on the Dronne. If markets are your forté then Riberac has one of the best (every Friday). Villebois Lavellette is in the Charente, 8 kilometres away, a market town with an excellent supermarket. There are numerous villages & towns nearby that have their fetes & celebrations during July/August. Brantome is a very picturesque town, called the little Venice of the 'Perigord Vert' due to its encircling river & the various boating opportunities that are available. Perigueux, the principal city of the Dordogne, is worth a days visit. It is festooned with flowers, and visiting the main square in the old town for lunch is an experience not to be missed. On Wednesday the market spreads around the old town and in the grounds of the magnificent cathedral. Angouleme, principal city of the Charente, is really fascinating and has a long history, including being the World capital of cartoons & comics, boasting an impressive cartoon museum; enormous cartoons form part of the town-centre architecture.
Wine & brandy lovers will note the proximity to Cognac, Bordeaux, Bergerac & Saint-Emillion. A complementary bottle of local red wine awaits your arrival in our gite.
The Perigord-Limousin Nature Park is on the doorstep.
The Dordogne contains 10% (so 4000) of all of Frances chateaux (castles), and also boasts the world famous 30,000 year old cave paintings.
This is the "Perigord Vert" (green) quarter of the Dordogne, so called because of its green woodland, lush valleys and streams.

SPECIAL INTEREST HOLIDAYS:
We don't particularly specialize, but if you have any special interests such as photography, vegetarian cooking, astronomy, entomology, etc., do tell us, as we may well be able to enhance your holiday.

TRAVEL:
Bergerac airport 1 hour, Angouleme airport 1 hour, Limoges airport 1.5 hours, and Bordeaux airport 1.5 hours. There is also a newly opened airport at Brive. France has a superb high-speed rail network, and travel from England to Angouleme (which is just 3 hours from Paris) is straightforward, with car hire at the station (45 minutes away).

OUTSIDE:
The cottage sits in 2 acres of beautiful gardens overlooking a valley with breathtaking views; a national viewing point is a mile away. The cottage includes private use of a large swimming pool ("double bubble" shape), whose depth is 1.1 metres (42 inches) all over. Serving the pool is a solar-heated shower. Concerned parents can keep access to the whole pool area under lock & key if desired. There is a grassed play area for the younger ones adjacent to, and visible from, the pool area, and a tree-shaded table-tennis area. The cottage has an adjacent patio area including garden furniture and barbecue. All of the gardens are at your disposal to wander around in peace. Walking around the gardens allows you to see for miles in almost every direction, as the property is situated slightly below the ridge of a very long hill amongst rolling hills. There are no visual distractions like overhead cables or non-rural constructions, and no airports, busy roads, railways nor building sites to be heard (although noisy children are welcome here!).

NOTES ON ACCOMMODATION:
Free internet access is available by WiFi and also ethernet. Mobile phone coverage is excellent. The owners are readily available (but only if wanted!) to provide any on-the-spot information, suggestions, recommendations, or assistance such as phoning (in French) to book restaurants or activities.
Satellite TV & radio via ASTRA2 offers plenty of English channels: BBC1/2/4, ITV1/2/3/4, ch.4 & 5, E4, More4 and plenty of movie & music channels. There are numerous books, DVDs, toys and games (indoor/outdoor) and abundant local attraction brochures.
Bedding, indoor towels, and cleaning materials are included. A cot and various other amenities can be provided; please ask when booking. The cot has a mattress and we can also supply bedding for baby.
Bedroom 1: Open-plan upstairs area with double bed & lounge area. Picture windows give spectacular views from the bed and lounge over the gardens, fields, woods and valley. iPod dock/alarm/radio.
Bedroom 2: Ground-floor bedroom has 2 single beds (adult bunks: 88 x 188 cm, 3 x 6 feet 2 inches).
Bathroom: Shower, sink, and toilet. Instant gas-heated hot water is always available, in the kitchen also. In addition to this, there is a solar-heated shower at the pool.
Laundry facilities are freely available in a separate block.
There is plenty of interesting wildlife in the gardens, so we don't allow pets!

CHANGEOVER DAYS: 
Our week is normally Saturday to Saturday, arriving from 4pm and departing by 10am. 
Alternative days, and durations, will be considered outside of the peak season. Arrival at any time of day or night can be arranged, but early arrival or late departure may not be possible.

PRICING: 
Prices shown are for one week (7 nights) in UK Pounds Sterling. Payments can be made by electronic transfer or by cheque, in pounds or Euros. Prices include electricity & gas (but exclude heating which may be required in the cooler half of the year). A deposit of 25% is due on booking, with the balance due 8 weeks before arrival. A returnable damage deposit of 100 pounds is also added to the balance, being returned afterwards. The weekly charge is for up to 4 persons (+baby); visitors may be permitted if agreed in advance. In the event of late cancellation, we will re-advertise; however the balance will only be refundable if the cost is covered by a replacement booking.
