The Village "A little history"
Alsas is the ancient name of Montpezat. It is an act of the bullaire of Saint-Gilles which reveals the identity of the villa Alsatis of the charter of 9941 and the village of Montpezat. The importance of the castle of Montpezat, castrum MontisPesati cited in the bull of 1156 of Pope Adrien IV2, as belonging to the Bishop of Nimes, replaces at that time the original name Sanctus-Sebastianus de Alsatis which is found in the bullaire9. In the XIIth century, the village is a strong place occupying a strategic position on the first foothills of the Cevennes. Its warlike appearance strongly marks the landscape.

Montpezat, as many communes of this region had its share of misfortunes. During the wars of religion, about 1570, the Protestants of the environs, attacked by the marshal of Damville, took refuge in the enclosure of the castle, but a final assault took place and all the men were massacred there.

Heritage
Church of San Sebastián whose bell tower is surmounted by a stone spire in Gothic style.
The Romanesque church According to "The Parish of San Sebastian" - Raoul Jourdan The church of the 12th century was destroyed by the Huguenots of Montpezat whose chatelain was Jean Tremolet, acquired to their cause. The taking of the fortress in 1573 meant a return to Catholicism, which was then practiced by all the lords of the place. At that time, however, out of 80 to 100 houses in the village, it would seem that the majority remained Huguenot. In the absence of a church, the religious service was performed in a corner of the old choir, exposed to wind and rain. In 1663 the chatelains erected a chapel in the castle and worship was practiced there until the rebuilding of the church in 1686, the bell-tower of which was rebuilt in 1695. A new presbytery was built on the ruins of the old one in 1695. After the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, the chaplain of the castle received the abjurations of the Huguenot inhabitants, who, it seems, were more sincere in their return to Catholicism than others of the surrounding countries. Their attachment to their lords is probably the reason. It has indeed been found that this is the case with the majority of the castle villages. Where there is none, the number of Protestants is higher. In 1771, the chatelains built a small chapel attached to the church, which housed the family vault. At the Revolution in 1790, despite the population's resistance to revolutionary persecution, the church became the Temple of Reason and the presbytery, a common house. A large part of the inhabitants who remained faithful to religion practiced worship in the Mas de Giraud. Inside: Since 1849, it houses the relics of San Sebastian, received from Rome through the priest of Quissac. The painting of the Saint, donated by the Baron de Vignet, is the work of the painter Melchior Doze. The profound changes brought to the ritual under Pope John XXIII in 1962 led to an appropriate establishment: removal of communion benches, removal of the pulpit, statues, chandeliers and candelabra. On the other hand, the marquis's bench, the Pieta with the war dead 14-18, the confessional, the chapel and the altar of the Virgin remained. At the same time, the paintings were restored "to the old", with motifs of lily flowers!
South Gate
The South Gate is the only one to be preserved. It opens near the top of the street Porte des Remparts. The coast being particularly steep in this place, one imagines that the carts had to circulate only empty. The current staircase was completed in 1996. The door was protected on the right by a small tower. It was probably rebuilt partly on the old base and is made with a house. This entrance is covered by a stone arch on which are conserved two stones inscribed, become illegible.
Castle
14th century construction period; 16th century
Historical
It is mentioned in 994 and 1119. The castle was ceded to Saint-Louis in 1269 by the Bishop of Nimes. According to tradition, the king resided there. In 1521, it was sold to Pierre Trémolet, doctor of Francis I. In 1569, the Protestants seized it. In 1789, it is burnt but the fire is extinguished by the inhabitants of the village. The stairs were broken and the apartments looted. Before 1789, the building formed a quadrilateral closed to the south by a gallery or a wall forming a terrace. The chapel was on the terrace, next to the tower. The castle has conserved three building blocks surrounding a courtyard on three sides. The north wing is pierced on the courtyard by two wide arcades and a small door of the 15th century for the ground floor; Upstairs, it is pierced by two large bays with crossed and mullions. The east wing ends in a large square tower, partly ruined but whose crossed bays and mullions still exist. It has, on the level of the floor, a gallery in corbelling. The west wing ends to the south by an important round tower, flanked by a turret of polygonal staircase, carried by a trunk.
