After spending almost 10 years in Africa helping to improve the school system there, my husband and I moved to France. We live here with our daughter and her 7 year old son, 2 rescue dogs and 4 cats
Deux-Sevres has its own micro climate, over 2,600 hours of sunshine every year!
Oiron is known for it’s spectacular Chateau (once owned by Louis XIV for his mistress), now an art gallery. The nearby towns of Thouars and Loudun provide the traditional French charms of markets/coffee shops/main shopping areas, inc supermarkets. There are many ‘Vides Greniers’ (all-day car boot sales) locally Apr-Oct. Larger cities are about 1hr away, including Poitiers, and Tours
The whole area is renowned for many historical sites, including the spectacular Brezé.
Puy du Fou, the best historical re-enactment attraction in France, is 1.5 hrs away
The unusual zoo BioParc, at Doué-la-Fontaine is 45 mins away; as is Centre Parcs at Les Trois Moutiers - day passes are obtainable
We are 40 mins from Futuroscope and the Loire Valley, and 2 hrs will get you to the incredible mechanical elephant at Nantes, Le Marais Poitevin (Green Venice), or La Rochelle and beaches of the west coast. (more info below!)
On the Deux-Sèvres/Vienne border, Terzay is a secluded hamlet of just three houses about 4km from Oiron. It is in an unspoilt area, sparsely populated, with a relaxed, simple way of life
On our (mainly 16th century) site, we have an 11th century fortified tower. We are bordered by the fishing river Dive, and surrounded by fields and woodlands with tracks suitable for walking or cycling. It's so peaceful that we consider three tractors to be a heavy traffic day!
If you prefer peace and quiet to the crowded tourist spots, this is an ideal place to relax and unwind. For those with more energy, tourist attractions are within reach (France is a large country so trips of an hr or more - on beautiful empty roads! - are common)
Originally used as 4 pigsties, we have totally renovated what was once a derelict building to the highest standard, whilst keeping original features as much as possible
Being south-facing, the result is a light and airy, spacious dwelling, full of character. It has tiled floors throughout and a clean, fresh look, whilst remaining rustic and charming
There is everything you need for comfortable living, including its own front garden area where you can relax and soak up the rays, whilst enjoying the rural setting, and there is an above ground swimming pool for chilling in when the heat gets too much. At dusk you can see the owls who nest in our tower flying around, and bats. The lack of light pollution here means it is a great place for viewing the night sky in all its glory
All bedding linen, towels and tea-towels are included. A welcome pack will await you when you arrive
The kitchen/dining area is large, light and has vaulted ceilings, with original beams on show. A half-glazed door leads to the front of the property/the garden area, and a good size window allows you to enjoy the morning/early afternoon sun when indoors, but lets in plenty of light all day
The kitchen is suitably equipped for self-catering, including an electric oven/ceramic hob and an under worktop fridge with small freezer box
The dining area has a round table suitable for 4 people and an attractive old French dresser, where you will find plenty of games and books to entertain yourself
The main front door opens into the living area
This is open plan, together with the dining area and kitchen; clearly defined with the internal walls now showing off the beautiful original stonework
There is a large sofa and an armchair to relax in during the evenings and a dvd player, along with a selection of dvd's
The bedroom has the same charm with the original beams showing and plenty of original stone work in the walls
A beautiful large old French wardrobe is at your disposal and in there you will also find extra bedding
The double bed is in a classic French style
This room is very spacious and benefits from 2 windows, both facing south into the garden area, which let in a large amount of light. Both have dark curtains to shut out the early morning sun. A ceiling fan is fitted, and a portable fan is also supplied
1-2 extra 3' single beds or a cot can be accommodated comfortably by prior arrangement
A hairdryer is provided
A spacious room opening off the bedroom, with a luxuriously large wet-room shower behind a glass-block wall. Plumbed to modern standards with washbasin and low-level wc
Electric fan heaters available if needed, rarely needed during the summer season and even into autumn. A large wood-burning stove will be made available by the off-season
We have an array of board games and card games, as well as a selection of books. There is also a tv with a dvd player/selection of dvd's
Outside is an above ground swimming pool. (5m x 3.1m x 1m)
Wi-fi is available, but living in the middle of the countryside means that the internet is sometimes a bit 'iffy'. This does have the advantage that you can really 'get away from it all', should you want to!
GARDEN AND OUTSIDE
The grounds are not excessively "well manicured" - we try to strike a balance between human presence and nature.
The grassed area in front of The Piggery is exclusively for use of occupants, and opens into the large courtyard at the heart of the property. The above-ground pool is immediately adjacent, and there is plenty of space to relax, secluded from the outside world by the tower, which is between The Piggery and access road
Table, chairs, bbq and sunloungers all provided. Easy access down to the river to fish, or just watch the water
Parking is just outside The Piggery garden area. It is in the gated courtyard of the main house; has 24hr access with plenty of space
Access to The Piggery is on the level, (the approach is a mixture of grass and gravel). The main door is 69cms wide, and internal doors are 67cms. A second outside door opening off the kitchen area is 81cms wide if wider access is needed.
All the rooms are on one level, with no steps. The bathroom, being a wet-room has small thresholds of 2-3 cms in order to keep the water in!
A folding wheelchair which fits through all the doors can be provided
INFORMATION ABOUT ANY ADDITIONAL FACILITIES
We can provide a nice travel cot and booster baby chair if needed
