A recent study involving 3,500 students aged 12 to 18 showed that 7 percent of these students were 'cyber bullied', and nearly 30 percent suffered traditional bullying. Bullied children are at least three times more likely to commit suicide than those who are not. They are also more likely to use alcohol and drugs. Having the ability to counteract the effects of bullying is essential. The Bully-Countering Skills Course will teach your child how to deal with bullying.

Effects from Bullying

Previously, parents advised their children to ignore the bully or to fight back. A recent study concurs with a long line of research that emphasizes the serious consequences related to being victimized by a bully.

These consequences include an increased risk of:

• Suffering with mental health issues; these include anxiety, depression, psychotic symptoms, and problems behaving.

• Health problems related to the bullying.

• Additional school absences because of the previously mentioned health-related issues.

• A decrease in school participation.

• Low grades.

• Dropping out of school.

• Schools that have bullying issues tend to have students who fear/dislike school.

75 Percent of School Shootings are Related to Bullying and Harassment

The majority of bullying victims are not violent; however, there have been devastating consequences related to retaliatory violence. A recent study finds that of the more than 15,000 American high school students who were surveyed, those who were victimized by bullies are almost twice as likely to bring weapons to school (including guns).

Students victimized by bullies commit the majority of school shootings, in that seventy-five percent of shooting incidents at school are related to bullying and harassment.

Health Effects

Some hypothesize that being bullied is a form of ‘toxic stress.’ This toxic stress may influence physiological responses to adversity. This may be the reason that victims tend to develop health problems.

A recent study indicates that bullying victims have increased levels of the C-reactive protein, which is responsible for fighting off infection within the bloodstream. This increase of C-reactive protein (CRP) continues into early adulthood.

What a High CRP Means

High CRP levels indicate that the body is reacting to an injury, fighting an infectious agent, or responding to a chronic health condition like arthritis. CRP levels are also elevated in those who experienced abuse at the hands of an adult during their childhood.

These changes in the body indicate that our bodies react to toxic stress in the same way it does to infection. This may be the key to understanding how being bullied causes poor physical health even after the bullying has stopped.

Cyber Bullying Can Be Just as Devastating as Physical Bullying

When a child is bullied online, he/she is more likely to feel vulnerable at school or when away from home. Cyber bullying refers to any of the following forms of communication:

• Picture/video via mobile phone

• Text message

• Phone call

• Chat room

• Email

• Instant messaging

• Websites
