4bedrooms/2.5 baths Main house, plus detached 1Bed/1 bath Guesthouse.
Wake up to the sun peaking over the mountains and the sound of the rushing river + tropical birds. Immersed in the central valley jungle in an Eco/Permaculture community, retreat to our spacious eco-home full of modern amenities on a half-acre of private land. Enjoy the picture-perfect views from the 3 bedrooms + 3 indoor lounges areas + 2 decks + a cooling jacuzzi + kitchen (with dishwasher) and self-contained guesthouse. Hike along mountain trails or the river bends before diving in for a dip, enjoy the community infinity pool, movement/yoga deck and community hub/rancho.
45 min from SJO airport + 30 min to the beach, this well-developed eco-community is made-up of 44 homes with all the amenities (including fiber optic WiFi!) focussed on sustainability + permaculture while immersed in nature. Our home is 95% solar powered, and outside while we re-cultivate the landscape you can enjoy the mango, papaya, jackfruit, breadfruit trees (you can eat plenty from in season), and other herbs like turmeric, mint, local coriander, and aloe vera too. All water in the community is drinkable, and our community's bio-digestor returns greywater back to the local river clean. There is a permaculture garden you can receive a weekly harvest from, and the whole neighborhood land has been re-cultivated with both fruiting and ornamental plant life (some of which you can respectfully pick for fruity snacks!) The animal corridor is a beacon for bird watchers and you’ll often be visited by a hummingbirds, toucans, and many varieties of tropical birds from yellow chests to turquoise tails; butterflies, dragonflies, and winged-wonders are a daily visit; howler monkeys heard in the distance and spider monkeys swinging around the river, along with the sounds of frogs, crickets, and nighttime critters singing in the evening.
Just a 10-minute drive into town gives you access to local Costa Rican culture, farmers markets, and 30 minutes away is the start of classic Costa Rican the Pacific coast beaches (from secret white-sand wonders to the party-bumping beach town of Jaco)
We're not a hotel, but enjoy good design in an unpretentious living-life kinda way and love sharing our home. As world travellers, we get the small details that make one feel welcome in a new place. We have the inside scoop on the “secret” white sand beaches, where to get a good bite, local taxi + car rental info, local farmer markets and organic markets and grocery stores, and recommendations for traveling other parts of this gorgeous country. There is extra space to store luggage. Your balcony outlooks the marvelous mountain range. The common areas have plenty of space to relax on your own or connect with others if you choose. The kitchen has all the utensils you need to show off your pan-tossing or smoothie-making skills. The washer and dryer are easy to use, so no need to waste your precious travel/retreat time going into town finding a laundromat.
Guests have access to all the amenities of the community (pool, movement deck, and community hub), hiking trails, and river, and our half-acre lot of land to relax + fire pit at night.
We like to give our guests privacy but are here to help if you need anything. We travel the world and love meeting people from all walks of life, so open to connecting and also giving you space to enjoy your travels and discover the gems of this land and home that we hope you'll love!
Our home is on a hill and overlooks the jungle + mountains (accessible through the trails), so while we're steeped in nature there are fewer chances of jungle creatures visiting the home directly, but they are still around and so night time walking requires a flashlight. There is a security gate at the entrance of the community and the surrounding area is also peaceful and safe.
As an additional service to our house guests, we offer a fee-based airport pick-up and drop-off to help you avoid the potential hassles involved in the transitions into and out of your time in Costa Rica (something to particularly consider when you have night-time travel plans, but a nice comfort to have in any event). We also provide car rentals and tours to all corners of the country, including the Poas and Arenal volcanoes, La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a private Catamaran Sailing tour, a visit to an Organic Coffee farm, and tours custom made to our guests' requests throughout Costa Rica.
Our property managers, Aad and Marian Veltman, a multilingual (English-Dutch-Spanish-German) couple from The Netherlands, are ready to welcome you to La Perla de Atenas and will do everything within their power to make your stay a great success. They can arrange for you to have your fridge stocked with your favorite groceries upon arrival, or have a home cooked meal ready for you on your arrival day.
