Things To Do On Texada
There are lots of good hiking trails on Texada â?? and with no large predators (no bears or cougars) and no poisonous snakes, walking/hiking is a relaxed and enjoyable experience. Our Dr. Kay Garner Nature Trail at Shelter Point Park is a lovely 20 minute walk to a very beautiful, rocky beach where local flower rock can be found.
ATVâ??s (quads) are very popular among the resident population, and this activity is drawing more and more visitors to our island. With lots of forestry roads through beautiful wilderness areas, and the southern half of the island largely uninhabited, there is plenty of room for exploration.
In the forests, and along the roadsides, small black-tailed deer are numerous (and attract hunters to Texada during hunting season). Raccoons and squirrels are also seen. For bird watchers, bird life is abundant and varied, from Great Grey Heron, to Osprey and Bald Eagles, to several varieties of woodpeckers, sapsuckers, Oyster Catchers, cormorants, thrushes, loons, kingfishers, grosbeaks, ducks and geese, and hummingbirds galore! Many varieties of shore birds, ducks, and geese are also seen.
Texada is an industrialized island. There are limestone quarries here (tours can sometimes be arranged) as well as active logging.Texada Island is the largest of the Gulf Islands (except Vancouver Island) and is situated between Powell River on the mainland, and Comox on Vancouver Island. It is well served by BC Ferries (car ferry) to and from Powell River.â?¨The population of this large island is about 1100 people year round, with more in the summer. Texada gets more hours of sunshine and less rain than either Powell River or Comox â?? it definitely deserves its designation as the most northerly part of the Sunshine Coast! Winters are generally mild, but winter storms can be spectacular, especially with unimpeded ocean view! Bring your kayak for spectacular ocean kayakking experience. Birdwatching, hiking, swimming, boating, and fine dining at the Ravenous Raven in Gillies Bay or the best hamburgers and fries at the Texada Inn and Pub. The Royal Canadian Legion, Texada Branch is a welcoming place for visitors with food, darts, pool table and bar. There are gift shops and seasonal events to enrich your vacation experience. Texada Island United Church in Van Anda welcomes visitors. This reservation has a Flexible cancellation policy - refunds will be issued up to 30 days prior to the check in date.A 100% refund is provided for travellers cancelling at least 30 days before check-in.
