Shoal Bay would undoubtedly be one of the prettiest coastal towns Australia has to offer on the east coast. Shoal Bay is unique as it offers 3 surf beaches: Box Beach, Wreck Beach and Zenith Beach (all unpatrolled) as well as the calm waters of BIG beach which runs from the Tomaree and Yacaaba Headlands to Nelson Head, Little Beach. Renowned for its fishing heritage Shoal Bay is the home of the Port Stephens and Newcastle Game Fishing Club which hosts the annual Game Fishing Tournament in February each year. The Shoal Bay wharf is no longer used for the game fishing weigh-ins but is still a great place to throw out a line. There is a 2 lane all tide boat ramp with trailer parking for your vessels which is located at the Zenith Beach end of Shoal Bay. Enjoy a great day splashing around in the crystal clear waters, lying on the white sandy beaches, hire a stand up paddle board or kayak or water bike.
Hit the water - with your snorkel and goggles to discover a thriving underwater oasis at our famous Fly Point Park located between Nelson Bay and Little Beach.
Catch a break - Port Stephens is known for its beautiful surf beaches from Samurai and One Mile to Birubi Beach, Zenith and Box Beach. Take a surfing lesson and learn beach safety tips, as well as basic board and surf skills.
On your bike - Port Stephens is a great place to explore by bike! From rugged mountain biking along coastal tracks to family friendly cycle paths. Bring your own, join an organised tour or hire a bike once here.
Take a hike - Walk to the top of Tomaree Headland Lookout to enjoy striking views of Port Stephens and the offshore islands. It will take you about half an hour or so to reach the top but it is well worth the effort.
Talk to the animals - Enjoy a day out with the kids... bottle feed baby farm animals, get close to the kangaroos and koalas or plan a guided walk with Tilligerry Habitat to look for koalas in their natural environment.
Something to spout about - With over 140 bottlenose dolphins calling Port Stephens home, it’s no wonder these friendly locals are sighted so often. And, from May to November, the waters off Port Stephens play host to the magnificent migrating humpback whales.
Sandsational dunes - The Worimi Conservation Lands (Stockton Bight Sand Dunes) are truly one of natures’ masterpieces, stretching 32 kilometres these are the largest dunes of their kind in the southern hemisphere. Explore by foot, camel or horse, in your own 4WD, on a quad bike or join a 4WD tour and sandboard down 40 metre high dunes. Awesome.
Aboat time - There’s a hull lot to love about Port Stephens if you’re into boats. BYOB or hire a yacht, jet ski, kayak, ski boat or cruiser and discover the rivers, bays, marinas, islands and off-shore adventures for old sea dogs and the little tackers.
Food for thought - Try our local, home-grown produce: oysters, macadamias, figs, olives, avocados, boutique wines and craft brews.
