NOTE: As a thank you for reading this blog post, we are providing you with a free excerpt from Dan Castro’s book CRITICAL CHOICES THAT CHANGE LIVES.

I once heard a story of a doctor and a pharmacist who had experimented for years with recipes for a soft drink. Eventually, the doctor gave up and sold his interest to the pharmacist. The pharmacist continued, and just a few weeks later he developed the formula for Coca Cola, the most widely sold soft drink in the world today. The pharmacist’s name was Dr. John S. Pemberton. The year was 1886.
During the gold rush days in Colorado, a man named R.U. Darby and his uncle went west in search of gold. With only a pick and a shovel, they dug and dug until they finally struck the shiny gold ore. But they needed specialized machinery to bring the gold to the surface. They quietly buried their small mine and went back east to Williamsburg, Maryland and told a few relatives and neighbors of their find. They convinced them to invest and loan them the money they needed to buy the equipment and had it shipped to the mine.
They brought up the first car of ore and shipped it to the smelter. The results showed that they had one of the richest mines ever to be found in Colorado. A few more cars of this gold would pay their debts and then they could start reaping enormous profits. But then tragedy struck. The vein of gold disappeared. They searched and searched - desperate to pick up the vein again. But no luck. They continued drilling in vain and after a few more weeks of frustration, they gave up. They sold the machinery to a junk man for a few hundred dollars and took the train back home.
In the meantime, the junk man called a mining engineer to look at the mine. The engineer took some calculations and concluded that the project had failed because the owners were not familiar with “fault lines.” The junk took over the drilling and found the vein of gold within three feet of where the Darbys had stopped drilling! The mine turned out to be one of the biggest gold mines ever discovered in Colorado.

When you quit, you create a permanent solution to a temporary problem. When you quit, you guarantee the result you fear most—that you won’t succeed. The fact is, when you quit, you will not be around to experience the success that makes all your suffering count for something. Turn your pain into a purpose. Remember, the world is counting on you to do what only you can do.
"Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning."

Consider the development of fiber optics, which has allowed people all over the world to communicate with each other at the speed of light. After two years and millions of dollars, late one Friday, after everyone had left the laboratory, a scientist named Donald Keck decided to try shining a laser beam through yet one more sample of glass fiber drawn out as thin as a hair. Bending over a microscope, he slowly began to align the helium neon laser with the fiber's core. On every previous attempt, the signal-carrying light pulses had quickly disappeared. But not on this night. All of a sudden, the light raced all the way along the glass, bounced off the far end and sailed right back. Keck rushed out into the hall and caught his research chief at the elevator. "Hey, you want to see something neat?" he asked. And that was the advent of fiber optic communication lines, which would revolutionize the telecommunications industry.
Now fiber optics are used to transmit voice, video, and computer data at laser-pulse speed across the world. It would have been easy to quit after spending so much time and money and continually coming up with nothing. But Donald Keck persevered. He kept trying various alternatives until he found one that worked. He made a decision not to quit.
"Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close
they were to success when they gave up."

Dr. Gerald Mann, pastor of Riverbend Church in Austin, Texas, tells a story of a very successful businessman who called him one night in desperation. He was a devoted family man who had started a small business and built it into a corporate empire. He had given liberally over the years to charities and to his employees in the form of stock options. He said he was about to be indicted for tax fraud the next day. He knew he was innocent. But he couldn’t stand the shame, heartache, and emotional turmoil the indictment would bring on his family and himself, not to mention the thousands of dollars in attorney's fees required to defend himself. He had a gun in his hand and was about to commit suicide. Dr. Mann tried to counsel him, but the man lost patience and was about to hang up. He had already made up his mind to focus on the worst case scenario. What he was focusing on determined what he believed. This belief caused him to discount what Dr. Mann was saying.
The last thing Dr. Mann uttered quickly before the phone went dead was, "Wait to worry! Wait until they indict you. Wait till you get a lawyer. Then wait till you get his bill. Wait till you're pronounced guilty. Wait for the sentencing. Wait for the cell door to close. But wait to worry." Sure enough the man was indicted. He paid thousands of dollars in legal fees, but two years later, he was acquitted of all charges.
Some time later, at a fundraiser, the man saw Dr. Mann across the room, ran up to him and said, "I want you to know that your three words saved my life. I have them posted everywhere. In my car, on the refrigerator, on my desk. All over the offices. What I've learned is that God is out there in the future waiting for us." The few words Gerald Mann squeezed in that day were all the man needed to help him change his focus. Once he changed his focus, he was able to believe something different than what he had previously believed. If the man had actually taken his life that night, he wouldn't have been around to see his name cleared. Similarly, in our own lives, we don't know if we will succeed until the end of the story, when all the facts have unfolded. God's delays are not God's denials. Wait to worry. God is out there in the future waiting for us.
Sometimes I imagine that we, as people, are standing as children watching a parade through the knotholes of a tall wooden privacy fence. We cannot see the beginning or the end of the parade. We can only see the events as they pass right before us through the knothole. Because of our limited perspective, we cannot see the whole picture. We can only live one day at a time. How can we know whether something is a disaster or a miracle until we’ve seen the whole parade, the beginning and the end? Similarly, we cannot understand the whole book of our life when we’re reading a single page or a single chapter.
